After taking the lead in hardware sales for the months of November and December, two of the most lucrative months out of the whole year, Microsoft’s Xbox One has fallen back down to second place in January. That’s right; the PS4 is once again the number 1 selling console, at least for the month of January. NPD sales for January reveal that hardware sales were slightly off (by about 5%) their numbers a year ago, but that’s understandable....

The PlayStation 4 is entering the “final phase of its life cycle” according to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera, speaking at Sony Investor Relations Day 2018. Kodera spoke candidly to investors, analysts, and reporters regarding the future of the PlayStation 4 console, acknowledging the PS4’s remaining time was limited, but that the brand’s future remained strong. It’s important to frame Kodera’s language within the context of the event. Kodera is speaking to investors regarding the future of the company in terms of multiple years....

A number of Japanese media outlets and YouTubers were recently invited to a hands-on demo with the soon-to-be released PS5. The event resulted in the Japanese media publishing detailed photos of the PS5’s hardware, as well as gameplay demos of PS5-exclusive titles like Godfall and Astro’s Playroom, but Sony barred attendees from playing with the PS5’s most mysterious feature: its user interface. So far, the closest look that fans have received of the PS5’s UI was when Sony teased the console’s startup screen and animation during the official PS5 reveal in June....

The mystery surrounding Operation Chimera and the limited time event known as Outbreak for Rainbow Six Siege is quickly coming to an end. Ubisoft has been revealing new information on the first season of year 3 on a consistent basis this week including both new operators and some of the new cosmetic gear that launches alongside the update. Remedy Entertainment is currently working on several different projects, with the studio split into four teams developing five games. The developers behind Control have started work on a new AAA project, while a second team is hard at work on an action-packed sequel to Crossfire known as CrossfireX, and a third is developing Vanguard, which will allegedly be an ambitious free-to-play co-op title. A fourth team is working on two unannounced projects, with both games being developed for console and PC in collaboration with Epic Games....

The content creator, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, will troll his fans with videos that are deliberately misleading. PewDiePie’s fake apology video perfectly encapsulated the elements that make up real apology videos on YouTube, but his latest might not be a genuine prank. On a platform that has seen a number of hugely popular creators come and go, PewDiePie has maintained his celebrity over a decade of content creation, and only recently lost his title as the most subscribed YouTube channel (an honor now held by Indian music company T-Series)....

Released in Japan way back in 2012, Phantasy Star Online 2 will finally be playable in the West on March 17. Although it’s only a beta — and is a timed exclusive for Xbox One — Phantasy Star fans are probably chomping at the bit to go hands-on with the title. The open beta was announced earlier this week on Twitter, but it was surprisingly light on details. It tells us the date it starts, that it’s “coming first on Xbox One,” and that’s it....

Since the lengthy development of indie hit Fez - a game we love - became a thing of news headlines, its creator Phil Fish has been a voice that people in the industry (or following it closely) pay attention to on social media. He was even one of the spotlighted developers of Indie Game: The Movie, a wonderful documentary if you’ve yet to see it. His controversial words at conventions and on Twitter have gotten so much attention (read: too much) that he’s become one of the more famous gave devs and because of it, expectations of certain media representatives resulted in a Twitter brawl last year, causing Fish to erupt into a fury of social media rage to the point of him cancelling Fez 2 - just a month after announcing it....

There was a lot discussed in yesterday’s roundtable discussion between Bethesda and Microsoft, and although nobody really talked about specific games, we did get a hint for what these two companies have planned. One of the developers previously under the ZeniMax Media umbrella that has caught Xbox head Phil Spencer’s eye is Tango Gameworks, the Tokyo-based studio currently working on Ghostwire: Tokyo. Now that the purchase is official, Tango is Xbox’s first studio in Japan, and that’s something that Spencer has wanted for a long time....
