First released in Japan on April 19th, 2007, Persona 3 FES is the definitive version of Atlus’ cult-favorite Persona 3. The game that lead the way for Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal, FES is the version of the game most fans have experienced due to its popularity.
The enhanced version made some changes and alterations to the original, while adding in content that further improved the player’s experience compared to the first time around. Though the Persona series has exploded in popularity since its release, much about FES either goes unknown or underappreciated. Here’s what most fans don’t know about the classic JRPG.
10 FES Stands For “Festival”
Many fans have been confused about FES’ name over the years. Though many have tried to coin their own acronyms as to assume what the letters stand for, the answer is much simpler tan most might’ve guessed.
According to the game’s director, Katsura Hashino, FES simply stands for “Festival”. What that means in the greater scheme of things is much more open to debate. It could vaguely have something to do with the game, or it could have just sounded good.
9 The Journey & The Answer
FES made some narrative changes to the original Persona 3 story, and those changes are best represented in The Journey & The Answer. The Journey encompasses the original game’s story with the aforementioned changes and additions, while The Answer serves as an epilogue following the game’s ending.
Among the changes made in The Journey are the additions of secret videos of the protagonist’s dorm mates, being able to take Koromaru on walks and a new event involving Chidori, among other things.
8 Chihiro’s Design
Chihiro is a fan favourite social link. Initially shy and timid, Chihiro’s confidence grows over the course of her social link, and she turns into one of the game’s best developed characters.
Chihiro’s design is a pretty recognizable one, and she stands out among the side characters and even some of the main cast. That might have something to do with the fact that her design was based off of the original and rejected concept for Fuuka.
7 The Opening Song Is A Remix of Two Others
The Persona series has become known for a lot over the years. Gameplay, story, and dating sim mechanics are some of the biggest draws to the games, but one thing that’s always been consistent is its music.
If FES’s opening song sounds familiar to you, it’s because it probably is. The song is a remix of both the main theme from the original game, “Burn My Dread” & the end credits song “Memories of You”.
6 Ken’s Original Weapon
Ken might not look like he’s suited for the battlefield, but he’s just as competent with handling his Persona as the rest of his SEES teammates. Like everyone else in the game, Ken also wields a weapon as added insurance while exploring Tartarus.
However, Ken’s original weapon and what he ended up with are completely different. In some early concept art for his character, Ken is shown to have originally used darts as a weapon. This was changed to spears sometime in the development process.
5 Koromaru’s Inspiration
Koromaru is the teammate that no one expected, but everyone loved. The oddest man out in a group of interesting and unconventional characters, the inspiration for Koromaru’s character comes from another famous dog.
It is very likely that Koromaru is based off of Hachiko. Both dogs had their owners die, and as a result go to the place they last saw their master, eagerly awaiting their return.
4 The Abyss of Time & Dante
Unlike The Journey, The Answer doesn’t allow players to roam around freely and make use of the calendar mechanic. Instead, it outs them in a massive underground labyrinth called The Abyss of Time.
One notable detail about The Abyss is that the various floors players must explore are all named after a section of hell taken from Dante’s Inferno.
3 PS3 Port Issues
Fans who missed out on the PS2 version of the game were able to play it digitally when it was ported to the PS3 in 2012. As is the case with most ports, there were some issues.
There were a handful of issues with textures, and a freezing issue on 9/5 during the Full Moon Operation. There’s also a rare, but devastating problem with saved files. So backing those up is always recommended.
2 Unused Marriage Certificate
Plenty of things were cut out of the game during development. Everything from music, to cut scenes, dialogue and more. As the years have gone on, dedicated fans have discovered a multitude of cut content.
One of the more interesting of these is the presence of an unused marriage certificate. This seems fairly similar to the contract the player signs at the beginning of the game, though nothing about the role it would’ve served is known.
1 Innocent Sin Online
Fans of the series often note that the first two Persona games don’t get enough love from Atlus. That hasn’t always been the case however.
The Hermit Arcana Social Link is advanced through interactions with a player named “Maya” in an online game called Innocent Sin Online. This – alongside the protagonist choosing Tatsuya as his username – are all references to the Persona 2 duology.
