Charismatic, knowledgeable, quick-witted, and (probably) hypoallergenic, Morgana is an indispensable member of the Phantom Thieves from Persona 5. Representing the Magician Arcana, Morgana is there from almost the very beginning of the journey and throughout the game there is so much that is learned both from him and about him that by the end of the adventure he had fully stolen players’ hearts as well. Still, there are some lingering questions that Persona series fans still have about the lovable mascot character that still have us scratching our heads. Hopeful for answers in the upcoming Persona 5 Royal, here’s a list that will ask 10 unanswered questions that we still have about Morgana.

10 What Does He Remember?

Towards the end of the game, players learn Morgana’s true origins: he was created by Igor, master of the Velvet Room, in order to help lead the protagonist along his journey. It’s interesting, then, that when we initially meet him, Morgana is shown to be convinced that he has memories of being a human.

It’s unclear if these are completely fabricated by Igor, but players are, not surprisingly, curious about what those are. What was the life that Morgana remembered? Hopefully, players can get a little bit more insight in the upcoming Persona 5 Royal.

9 Why Can He Turn Into A Bus?

Morgana is a very talented cat. One of his many tricks includes being able to transform into a drivable Bus. This makes traversing Mementos easy for the Phantom Thieves as well as being helpful when needing to make a quick getaway like after completing Futaba’s palace. This, however, isn’t really something that is ever fully explained beyond a clever reference to a popular movie. While there’s a lot that can happen in the Metaverse, it seems interesting that this ability is one that specifically Morgana possesses - and that no one else has any even remotely similar ability. Again, it’s very useful, but at some point, players would surely appreciate the chance to learn more.

8 Has He Done This Before?

When players first meet Morgana in Kamoshida’s palace he makes it quite clear that he’s done this before, and that makes players wonder if he really has stolen treasures from dungeons in the past. If so, who? What crises has Morgana resolved single-handedly?

Alternatively, they could all just be memories that Igor created Morgana with and Kamoshida’s palace may have actually been his first shot at Phantom Theivery and he just didn’t realize it. After all, Zorro, Morgana’s persona, doesn’t start at a very high level.

7 Did He Have An Awakening?

One thing that players notice about every character that joins the Phantom Thieves is that each one has an awakening - a moment in which their Persona finally becomes available. This comes in the form of a cutscene in which the character rips off their mask and unleashes their true self. But Morgana? He doesn’t have a mask as far as we can tell, and that leads us to wonder whether or not he gained his Persona the same way, or if that ability was one that he came with. It doesn’t make him any less of a Phantom Thief, but it does make players wonder.

6 Why Is He So Strict?

Persona 5 sets itself apart from previous iterations by Morgana’s presence in your room. What this means for players that Morgana’s recommendation to sleep is law; if he says you aren’t going out, you aren’t going out. To be clear, it’s obvious that this is primarily done to ensure the plot advances the way it’s supposed to, but players would absolutely appreciate some lenience when it comes to how to spend time in the game.

After all, time is the most valuable resource and for players that prefer to complete as much as they can in the first playthrough can see Morgana’s strictness as one of the biggest hindrances to achieving that goal. Who knows, maybe in Persona 5 Royal he’ll be a bit more lenient.

5 What Is The Inspiration Behind His Persona?

The story of Zorro is a well known one, and the character undoubtedly fits the theme of “Phantom Thieves,” and honestly, the pairing of Morgana and Zorro is an awesome one. Still, fans can’t help but wonder: is there a particular reason why Morgana got this Persona specifically? Is there anything about Zorro or the character’s story that is reflected in Morgana’s story? Design influences are one thing and character designer Shigenori Soejima always shares the meaning behind design choices, but players would undoubtedly love to know what the tie in is that exists between Morgana and Zorro in particular.

4 Is He Too Similar To Teddie?

Comparing one game to another can be a dangerous thing and series fans will certainly try to avoid doing this if at all possible, but the similarities between Teddie from Persona 4 and Morgana are hard to ignore.

Both are anthropomorphic “mascot” characters that are unsure of their origin and have a unique bond with the protagonist that auto-levels as the plot progresses. While we know that the two are different in the sense that Teddie was originally a shadow and Morgana is one of Igor’s constructs, the two seem similar enough that it makes players wonder if the concept behind Morgana was a recycled idea.

3 Does He Know Justine and Caroline?

The Velvet Room is a Persona series staple where the protagonist goes to summon and fuse Personae as well as learn about the journey they’re on. This space is typically only accessible by those with the power of the Wild Card, which means that Morgana is never really in the Velvet Room with the protagonist. It begs an interesting question about Morgana, though; since he was created by Igor, wouldn’t it make sense that he would be familiar with the Velvet Room attendants, the dynamic duo that is Justine and Caroline? It’s known that Morgana doesn’t retain his memories of his origin, but once he does regain them, shouldn’t he have knowledge not only of his master but of the attendants as well?

2 Why Can’t He Control Himself Around Treasure?

Morgana, like all of the other characters, has his own unique quirks. Aside from his affinity for Tilefish Poele and his love for the Phantom Thief fantasy, Morgana absolutely loses himself around treasure. This is odd, considering nothing about his personality leads us to believe he’s greedy or materialistic, so it’s a point of curiosity that he gets so unhinged to the point where he accidentally sets off traps when he gets too excited. Not that there’s anything wrong with this of course, because there’s no situation the Phantom Thieves can’t figure their way out of, but why does this happen to Morgana?

Is it sort of like a GPS feature to help the protagonist along? Whatever the case, players sure would love to know more.

1 Who Is That Person?

Persona 5 Royal trailers have a lot for players to comb through, and by this point they absolutely have. Perhaps one of the earliest questions we’ve had about the trailers and screenshots that we’ve been treated to in the months leading up to its release is, of course, who it that person? You know the one; the person we saw in the Protagonist’s room who looks a whole lot like what we could only assume a human Morgana would look like. Is it true? Is Morgana getting a human form in Royal? Or is there more to this than we’re being led to believe?
