Persona 5: Royal is taken a great game and perfects it. One of the ways it does this is by introducing a cast of extra characters. While some characters will influence the story progression, Jose is a bit different.

He can only be found in the Theif’s Den or Mementos. In both, he appears to be a young boy, although he doesn’t seem bothered by the presence of shadows. He even sets up camp in Mementos and seems to relax as he hides his time waiting for you. If you want to learn a bit more, keep reading below for ten things you need to know about Jose.

10 He Makes Mona Jealous

Strangely enough, Jose has the appearance of a young child. While the rest of the group finds this a bit odd, the girls state he is cute on many occasions. This, of course, includes Ann who Mona claims he is in love with. Whenever the group converses with Jose in Mementos, Mona is quick to make comments about Ann complimenting Jose.

It also doesn’t help the Mona was called a Tanuki by Jose when they first met.

9 He Can Drive Quite Well

Despite appearing around the age of six, Jose is quite skilled at driving. Even as Mementos gets more twisted, he has no trouble moving around. In the Thieves Den, he even breaks through a wall to meet you. Some of the characters like Kasumi will even act surprised to see him driving a car, but he seems to throw caution to the wind, especially when entering new zones.

If Jose is on the same level as you, he will come flying by as soon as you enter the level.

8 He Breaks Down Will Seeds

One of the new features of palaces is the addition of hidden will seeds. Each palace has three of these seeds hidden throughout. When you collect them, they combine to form a crystalline skull. Once you get rid of the palace, you can talk to Jose, who will gladly take the item from you. Jose will then hammer away at the skull to turn it into jewelry.

This will give you an achievement as well as special armor.

7 His Items Grow

Jose has many different purposes, but the one gamers will find themselves using most often is his shop. In exchange for flowers, you can get special items. On the few first floors of Mementos, this stock will be limited. With each passing area, you unlock though, Jose will let you know that his exploration has led him to be able to offer more items to you.

He is a great way to get special healing items and incense without spending money.

6 He Places The Stamps

One of the newer features of Mementos is the ability to collect a set number of stamps per area. Each level can have one to two stamps, one at the exit and one that his hidden behind a door or a wall. Jose will place these stamps around Mementos after your first meeting with him. He sees that stamps as a great way to guarantee that you collect more flowers for him.

As you unlock more areas, the number of collectible stamps will increase.

5 He Drinks Flowers

You may be wondering why there are flowers in Mementos and why a young boy is so obsessed with them. The flowers in Mementos aren’t actually plants, but part of people’s cognitions. These fragments, when given to Jose, are turned into drinks that he can them consume. By consuming them, he claims that he can get a better understanding of humans.

This is why he goes through so much trouble to have you trade with him.

4 He Can Change Mementos

When you collect enough stamps, you can redeem them with Jose. By redeeming stamps, he offers you the chance to change the cognition of Mementos. He will allow you to increase the items, experience, and amount of money you can receive from fighting or running over enemies. He does this by performing acupuncture on the palace using his hammer.

He claims to have learned to change Mementos while just looking around.

3 He Isn’t Human

When you first meet Jose, you will learn that he isn’t a persona user. Instead, Mona will state that he is neither human or shadow. He also doesn’t seem to be connected with the Velvet room as Igor never mentions him, and Mona doesn’t become familiar with him after regaining his memories. He also has a line of dialogue the states there are many people watching over humans.

This may prove that Jose is an alien or from another dimension.

2 He Hates The Taste of Warped Mementos

Jose seems to enjoy drinking flowers or, at the very least, be tolerant of their taste. After you unlock the final part of Mementos, though, you will have a cutscene where Kasumi finally meets him. In the cutscene, he will transform a flower-like normal but verbally announce his distance for the taste, possibly hinting towards the fact that the flowers aren’t true human desires.

This points to the fact the Thieves make the right call in the final palace.

1 He is an Extra Boss

If you manage to collect every single stamp and turn them in, your prize is the ability to fight Jose. He wants to vent his frustrations much like humans do and decide that taking Joker on is the way. He is a boss that should be feared much like the reaper and can use every type of elemental attack. This makes him a perfect hidden challenge for those who have beat the reaper.

Just make sure to take plenty of healing items if you want to survive.
