Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal’s Morgana is known for a lot of things: his unrequited love for “Lady Ann” Takamaki, his never-ending policing of Joker’s bedtime schedule, and his insistence that, despite his feline-like appearance, he is definitely not a cat.
The last fact, in particular, is a bit of a sore subject for the tiny Phantom Thief, who is prone to pretty aggressive comebacks whenever someone mistakenly refers to him as an animal.
However, one scene in the newly released Persona 5 Royal features a small, yet important, moment of acceptance from the multi-talented anthropomorphic figure when he finally accepts the reality of his appearance.
To be fair, by this point in the game, Morgana has remembered that he’s actually a creation made by Igor in the Velvet Room that was designed to lead Joker. However, in the real world, Morgana takes on the appearance of a cat, one that he’s continuously opposed.
This scene in the third semester signifies the first time Morgana willingly accepts that he is, in fact, a cat in the real world. Additionally, given his sincere apology to Joker for forgetting who he truly was, as well as his strong resolve against Maruki’s temptations in the final boss battle, it appears that this one line is indicative of a much deeper and wholehearted acceptance of who he truly is.
Persona 5 Royal is available now, exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
