Since Atlus’ Persona 5 first came out in 2017, many fans have commented on how the character of Futaba Sakura bears a striking resemblance to the Inkling Girl from Nintendo’s Splatoon. Even though one is a human girl and the other is a squid-like humanoid, fans have noticed a number of similarities. With their vibrant orange hair, blunt bangs, black-rimmed eyes (or eyeglasses, in Futaba’s case), white t-shirt, headphones, and classic smirk, the two look incredibly alike.

The two’s resemblance has inspired a lot of hilarious memes, original artwork, and other fun creations from fans who can’t get over the two’s character designs.

The comparison between Futaba and Inkling Girl has become so ingrained in fans’ heads that one Persona 5 fan and Redditor couldn’t help but notice a hilarious coincidence in the game.

Redditor u/ATM_Gojira27 posted a screenshot of a line from Morgana where he references Sojiro, Futaba’s adoptive father: “I guess the chief had an inkling after all…”

Though this is likely a coincidence and not something deliberately planned by Atlus, Morgana’s word choice (“inkling”) and Futaba’s placement in the background of the scene is a hilarious reference to Futaba and Inkling Girl’s similar appearances.

Persona 5 is a JRPG that tells the story of a vigilante group named The Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Comprised of high schoolers in Tokyo, members of the group individually gain the power to enter the Metaverse, a supernatural world that houses the physical manifestations of people’s distorted desires, and decide to use their powers to rid the world of corrupt adults. Led by Joker, the protagonist, the game uniquely combines social simulations and turn-based combat for an experience like no other. Persona 5 Royal, an enhanced version of the game featuring an entirely new semester and new characters, was released earlier this year.

Splatoon and Splatoon 2 are third-person shooter games where players control squid-like humanoid characters, called Inklings and Octolings. Players can live out their paintball fantasies and splatter colored ink like ammunition against other players or on paintable surfaces to create swimmable areas or to refill their tanks. Last month, Nintendo reported that the game had sold over 10 million copies.

Persona 5 Royal is available now, exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Splatoon 2 is available now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
