While everyone is excited for some more Persona content, we have to sacrifice some of the key mechanics in the series to get it. Changing directions a little and making it more action packed, this means that fans of the love stories will have to take a back seat this time, dashing the hopes that some of us had of getting more in depth into some of the best characters in the series.

Even though there won’t be any romances, they still provide us with plenty of characters that we wish we could romance. With a completely different system in place, the screen time we do get is all the more important. Even though Persona doesn’t miss when it comes to characters, a few stand out among the rest and leave us wanting more.

6 Makoto Niijima

The good girl who slowly turns into a badass, Makoto is definitely one you want on your side if things go wrong. Especially now that players know her high expectations, it’s easy to look past that and see what an asset she can be in any relationship.

This hits even harder when a lot of fans don’t think we got enough of her in the first title. Her intelligence shows both in battle and her arcana, The Priestess. Building up a romantic relationship with her in the game would have been sure to unlock some wisdom that the protagonist and player needed to hear.

5 Futaba Sakura

Who can resist the quiet types? Futaba is probably the most reserved and shy character in the game, making her all the more interesting. While she doesn’t exactly give off the mysterious vibe, we all know she has some stories to tell.

Opening up more storylines and cut scenes that we all need a little more of, any chance to get some more Futaba screen time is a good choice. Now fans are left with her all too rare input in group scenes and relying on her ultimate arcana for help. While we already have a lot of context for the character, she’s not one of the highest rated characters for nothing and a little more wouldn’t hurt.

4 Ann Takamaki

The kindest member of the Phantom Thieves, it’s hard to find a reason not to romance the lively fighter. She even acts as the group’s “moral center;” a title not given out lightly in a team of  people fighting back against the evil in the world.

Everyone needs someone to keep them on track every once and awhile, if they have a pretty face then that’s just a bonus. Since the events of Persona 5, Ann has become a strong person that constantly has her eye on the big picture, something that could have been explored even further.

3 Haru Okumura

Awkward and underestimated, Haru’s reserved nature hides one of the quirkiest personalities in the game. Anyone who’s favorite genre is Horror is bound to be a lot of fun in a relationship, if not a little scary. The chance to uncover some of her quirky personality would have been a great addition, even if it takes us down some weird roads.

We also find out that she’s an adept ballet dancer that has been classically trained when she was young, a skill that many characters can claim. Her polite and well spoken manner is hard to resist, a positive that came out of being raised with an iron fist, the storylines would have been very interesting.

2 Alice Hiiragi

A famous singer that has the fashion sense to match, players would definitely get an experience much different from the other characters. Romancing Alice would be a case of curiosity more than anything, especially given her wild behavior and roller coaster lifestyle.

For one of the most interesting characters in the game and a very smart enemy, it’s a shame that players don’t get to explore more of the unhinged girls life. A character that isn’t playable in the story, we can’t even unravel the story in first person. The trouble you could get up to and the interesting situations would make up for the drama, Alice is an untapped market that will hopefully make an appearance when the romance is back.

1 Kuon Ichinose

The creator of EMMA, the AI that features throughout the game, Kuon has more than her stunning looks on her side. Taking her on as a villain might be a red flag for some but players also get a glimpse of her human side as the story plays out, once again riding the grey area that Persona does so well.

Not only would we get to see what this ice queen does on the holidays but the events that lead her up to today would be a great journey to go down. One of the characters that we don’t get a deep dive into, a romance would definitely answer some of the questions that need to be answered.
