After beating rival FIFA to exclusive rights for Serie A giants Juventus, Konami’s eFootball PES (formerly just Pro Evolution Soccer) has lost licenses for two of the league’s most iconic clubs.

Konami announced this week that licenses for both Internazionale and AC Milan will not be renewed in upcoming installments.

EA lost rights to have the name Juventus in FIFA 20, with the defending Italian champs sealing a deal with Konami in which the developers gained exclusive rights to their name. FIFA 20 has Juventus dubbed Piemonte Calcio but names and faces have remained.

Konami’s announcement assures that players who own eFootball PES 2020 won’t be affected by the development. However, moving forward, Inter and AC will go under different names.

The announcement as it pertains to Inter reads:

A similar notice was posted with regards to AC Milan.

“Thank you for playing eFootball PES 2020 and your continued support. Our licensing contract with FC Internazionale Milano will not be renewed. The representation of the Club will not be affected in eFootball PES 2020.

“In regards to other KONAMI football games, please wait for future announcements for each title. FC Internazionale Milano have been a strong advocate for the eFootball PES series we wish the club all the best in the future.

“Moving forwards, we will continue to strengthen existing partnerships and foster new relationships in order to provide the best possible eFootball experience.

Thank you again for your support and understanding.”

The future is a bit vague for PES where Italian teams are concerned, in spite of them having snagged rights for Serie A’s biggest club. The league is one of the only top tiers to have full representation in the game. Konami had rights to all clubs, badges and players but it appears that there’s now room for FIFA to move in and possibly make things worse.

This development comes in the wake of the real-life EURO 2020 getting postponed. This does affect Konami as they would have added content based on the tournament to this year’s game. They have released free DLC as a result, however.
