It seems the last crossover between Phantasy Star Online 2 and the Yakuza series was rather successful because Sega has announced that a second one will be happening in the not so distant future. On Twitter yesterday, the Japanese account for PSO2 confirmed that in January 2021, a new event centered on Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be hitting the game with some new skins and weapons for players to collect.
As seen in a Livestream, players can don the attire of protagonists Ichiban and Saeko, mimicking their look and feel in PSO. You’ll have access to Ichiban’s spiked bat and Saeko’s naginata, as well as earn the ability to perform an “Extreme Skill.” There’s even a helmet of Ono-Michiyo, the latest running gag in the series that started with Yakuza 6.
So far, the event is scheduled for Japan only. The start time is also a little unclear, with Siliconera reporting January 2021 and Twinfinite stating there will be three parts that take place across December 2020 and January 2021. Either way, more Yakuza is heading to Phantasy Star Online 2.
If you’re worried that Sega won’t bring this content west, I don’t think you have anything to fear. The growing popularity of Yakuza in the west has seen the company prioritize getting localizations done within the same year of the Japanese release for new entries. PSO2 was also finally brought over after nearly a decade of back-and-forth about localizing it. I think Sega wants to do right by its fans, even if it tends to make nonsensical decisions about certain brands.
