The hype for the next generation of systems is building, but there is one figure in the industry who isn’t impressed by the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya likes the Nintendo Switch more than what he has seen of Microsoft and Sony’s upcoming outings.
In a 2019 interview, Kamiya said that the next generation of systems will improve the graphics and load times, but they won’t be innovative. At the time, Kamiya was more intrigued by the upcoming Google Stadia than any of the new systems.
Kamiya was recently interviewed by VideoGamesChronicle and he elaborated on his previous stance. According to Kamiya, the advancements of the next generation of systems are not as exciting as the jump in previous generations, such as from the Super Nintendo to the original PlayStation. By comparison, Kamiya finds the Nintendo Switch to be more ground-breaking than the competition, as the ability to play a home console on the go broke a barrier that many people didn’t even realize existed.
It’s hard to argue with Kamiya’s logic, considering the information we know about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Microsoft and Sony have promised a lot but haven’t backed up their words with anything tangible. The next generation of systems won’t be released for a while yet, so they have a chance to prove Kamiya wrong in the future.
