A new update on the PlayStation website confirms that the new DualSense controllers for the PlayStation 5 won’t be getting any back buttons or triggers, contrary to what many had thought would be the case.

Earlier this year, the PlayStation 4’s DualShock controllers got their own Back Button Attachment. The attachment is a peripheral which connects to the DualShock 4 controller via the headphone jack and gives the player access to two more buttons.

The Back Button Attachment was apparently conceptualized primarily with competitive gaming in mind, specifically with the intention of allowing fast button-mashing to be that much faster. But it’s also a handy addition for casual gamers looking to have a smoother experience with games that require more fiddly finger action (you just have to get used to it first, though).

With the Back Button Attachment gracing controllers the world over, many believed it was a bit of a foreshadow for what the PlayStation 5 might have in store too. The fact that the attachment was introduced with the PS5 reveal just around the corner also supported this theory.

But a new update on the PlayStation website shows that this won’t be the case after all. The site shows a 360-degree look at the new PS5 DualSense controllers, and from that we can see there are no back buttons or triggers included on the new device. But that of course doesn’t mean it won’t be getting its own special Back Button Attachment like the one available for the DualShock 4 controllers.

In addition to this, Sony has also just confirmed that the PS4 DualShock controllers won’t be compatible with PS5 games, unfortunately. However, we know that we will be able to play PlayStation 4 games on the PS5, and that there will be two versions of the new console to be released this holiday season. We still don’t have an exact release date though, nor do we have a confirmed price tag.
