Details about a new feature being introduced via the PS5 have leaked, and it would seem Sony’s promise to eliminate waiting times wherever possible may hold true.

When it comes to a new console, or any bit of tech really, many people might think it couldn’t possibly be improved upon when first using it. Not to say that it’s perfect necessarily, but it’s hard to imagine how it could be any closer to perfect. Console creators always find a way, though, and one of Sony’s main aims, as we head into the next generation of console, is to cut down on how long gamers are waiting around.

That can pertain to a few things. How long it takes to install a game, how long players are left staring at loading screens, or even the transition sequence as they step through a door in-game. Some of the above might not bother gamers on the surface, but it will be a little like the transition from dial-up to broadband. Once we have those faster loading times, we’ll wonder how we ever lived without them.

It turns out Sony may have thought outside the box somewhat when figuring out how to cut down on waiting times on PS5. During a preview of WRC 9, Gamereactor mentioned a PS5 feature called “Activities”. The preview has since been taken down, but the description of the feature can be found below and reads that it is “an instant deeplink to specific races directly from the console’s menu”.

What that presumably means is players will be able to access certain parts of certain games without having to go through the rigmarole of starting up the game from scratch every time. For instance, anyone who has played Fortnite on console knows it can take a while to load up. Should Epic take advantage of the PS5’s Activities feature, players may be able to jump into a Duos or Team Rumble match directly from the console’s menu.

Nothing pertaining to the new Activities feature has been announced or even mentioned by Sony as of right now, but the leak seems promising. In 2019, a video showing off the PS5’s rapid rendering and load times was leaked, so it’s no secret that Sony is all about trimming down waiting times. If players know exactly where they want to go in a game, the Activities feature could do that in a major way.
