As one of the original 151, Gengar has built up quite the fan base over the years. While its effectiveness in battle certainly helps it case, Gengar has always been a popular Pokémon. One of the only few Ghost-types for a long time, Gengar always stood out. It’s unique design and the fact that it was one of the first Pokémon ever seen in action – via the little battle animation at the beginning of the Gen I games – make it easy to see why it stands out so much.

Being part Ghost-type, most people see Gengar as an intimidating Pokémon. Though it certainly looks the part, every Pokémon has a lighter side to them we don’t always get to see.

Jester Tyler did a great job in showing Gengar’s off with their work. The jovial atmosphere isn’t something we’re used to associating with Ghost-types, but it works very well here.

9 A New Friend – mint

Allister may seem like a strange Gym leader at first, but he’s probably just a little misunderstood. Ghost-type trainers have always been a little different from others, and Allister is no exception.

Gengar is Allistar’s strongest Pokémon, and mint paints an interesting depiction of what might’ve been their first encounter. Though it’s just a shadow, the artist really manages to nicely capture Gengar’s ferocity and haunting appearance with their art.

8 GigantaGar - かおす

Gigantamaxing wasn’t everyone’s favourite new mechanic, but like Mega Evolutions it gave fans plenty of different takes on old and new faces. Pokémon don’t simply get bigger with this, and their apperanvce can change quite drastically.

6 Best Buds - ミタニスルメ

Another Allister and Gengar piece, but this time a little less intense. The two certainly make for an interesting duo.

ミタニスルメ does a good job of presenting oth characters in a more light-hearted way. It’s not something that the two benefit from often and the artist really managed to do a good job with it.

5 Mega Evolved - タルト フラン

Mega Evolutions are pretty popular, and some more than others. Gengar is certainly atop that list.

Mega Gengar is certainly one of the better designed Mega Evolutions, and タルト フラン foes a great job in paying homage to the original design. The intense colors perfectly compliment its color pallet, and do a great job of bringing out the design’s best features.

Gengar isn’t the only Gen I Pokémon who’s managed to maintain a certain level of popularity over the years. Be it nostalgia or whatever else, a good amount of Gen I standouts have found their way into fans’ hearts.

石井リス draws Gengar amid a slew of generation favourites here. Having them all together in one place is great, as is the art. It’s smooth, mellow and the style perfectly matches the serenity of it all.

3 Mega Gengar - たま

Mega Evolutions have some of the most popular designs in the entire Pokémon series. While only a select few have them, the designers did a good job in making sure that those designs stuck out to fans.

たま‘s art certainly stands on its own. The uniqueness in which they draw Mega Gengar really stands out. They really manage to get that devious grin down well.

2 Shadow Ball – ataru

Gengar can be a pretty scary opoponent to face, or it can be a very reliable ally. Given how high its Special Attack is, Gengar’s Shadow Ball is one of its best moves.

ataru really does a great job of illustrating the move, which capturing some of Gengar’s character with this piece. The art is awesome, and the visuals really help sell it.

1 Community - しょう

We often don’t think about it, but plenty of Pokémon belong to their own little community. It’s showed off in the anime and to an extent the games, but it’s not really seen as that important of a detail.

しょう takes this idea and runs with it. The scene looks wonderful and the eerie colors really fit Gengar and Co well.
