Dark-type Pokémon are one of the most spiritual types in the Pokémon world and they use special attacks to hit their opponents. Trainers that appreciate Dark-type Pokémon are typically powerful trainers that want to win during their Pokémon journey.
This list will let fans in on 10 facts that they probably didn’t know about Dark-type Pokémon. From the tie for the tallest Dark-type to Darkrai’s pure typing, here are 10 facts that most players never knew about Dark-type Pokémon!
10 Gen II
Newer fans might find this surprising but the Dark-type was not originally in the series like most other types. This type was introduced with Generation II and many Pokémon debuted to go along with it, including Umbreon.
Players loved the new Dark-type when it was initially introduced, along with the other new type, Steel, that also made its debut during that era. This type has an interesting history even if it wasn’t around since Kanto.
9 Highest Base Stat
Dark-type Pokémon are a powerful typing and many trainers wonder what the most powerful Dark-type creature of all time happens to be. Mega Tyranitar has the highest possible base stats of any Dark-type and many players want one of these mega evolving Pokémon for themselves.
Getting this Pokémon is difficult because it requires both the power to mega evolve Tyranitar and the trainer to catch one of the giant beasts. Most trainers will never get their hands on one of these but anybody can dream!
8 Highest Level Evolution
Dark-type Pokémon tend to evolve at higher levels most of the time but there is one Pokémon that blows almost everything else out of the water. Zweilous is a powerful Dragon/Dark-type that evolves at level 64.
Only incredibly powerful Pokémon evolve at a high level such as 64, with most reaching their final evolution at lower levels around 20 or 30. This is a Pokémon that trainers don’t want to mess with.
7 Evil Damages The Soul
Many players may wonder why Dark-type moves are super effective against Ghost-type Pokémon and the reason for that is quite surprising. Dark-types can be considered “evil,” consequently, Ghost-type Pokémon are susceptible to them because evil power happens to inflict more damage on the soul.
Since Ghost-type Pokémon have souls that are always showing, they become easy targets for these evil attacks to do damage to them. While Dark-types aren’t evil most of the time, misguided training can definitely turn them bad!
6 Highest HP Stat
It should come as no surprise at all to learn that the Ultra Beast Guzzlord has the highest HP out of any Drak-Type in the series. Its giant body is built like a tank, so it makes sense that it would have very high HP.
Guzzlord uses its mouth and powerful special Dark-type moves to attack its opponents and make swift work of them. There aren’t many Pokémon that can defeat an Ultra Beast and Guzzlord’s high HP only adds to the list of its positive attributes.
5 Highest Speed Stat
Ash’s Greninja shares a special bond with its trainer and apparently, this bond somehow improves Greninjas speed stat! Ash’s Greninja is the fastest Dark-type Pokémon in the entire series, along with just being quite the powerhouse.
High speed isn’t something Dark-types are usually known for, however, because this frog starter is also a ninja, it can move at incredible speeds. Its powerful Ash form is no exception!
4 Lightest Dark-type
Murkrow is a cute Dark/Flying-Type that many Johto trainers adore. Its cute appearance makes every trainer want it and it will be very easy to hold because it weighs almost nothing.
Perhaps because Murkrow is a Flying-type, it needs to be physically light so it can fly quickly. In any case, many fans love this Dark-type bird and its very easy to see why!
3 Tie For Tallest Dark-type
Large Dark-type Pokémon are plentiful, however, there are two beasts that are absolutely gigantic compared to the rest. Unbound Hoopa and Mega Gyrados both have the same height and their incredible size makes them a foe that can be rivaled by few others.
Trainers should consider adding one of these to their team because having a large Pokémon always intimidates the competition especially when they’re a Dark-type. More importantly, they also tend to be pretty powerful and tanky.
2 Darkrai
A lot of fans assume that Darkrai is a dual Dark/Ghost-Type Pokémon; in reality, it is solely a Dark-type. Many players never obtained one of these Pokémon in the Pokémon games so it’s no surprise that they aren’t familiar with its typing.
Darkrai is the only pure Dark-type introduced in the Sinnoh region and it’s to be expected because it is mostly black in color and has the word dark right in its name.
1 52 Pokémon
There are only roughly around 60 Dark-type Pokémon in existence as of Gen-VIII. This figure comes out to about 7% of all Pokémon having Dark as either their primary or secondary type. This isn’t especially surprising but it is an interesting fact that most players aren’t aware of.
Because of the low amount of Dark-type Pokémon, the ones that do happen to exist tend to be quite loved. Hopefully, future generations will introduce a lot more powerful Dark-types for trainers to catch, but for now, trainers will have to work with what’s already there. Luckily, there are so many powerful Dark-type Pokémon already!
