May is a fan favorite Pokémon girl that traveled with Ash during his time in the Hoenn region. Many fans remember her for her fiery personality and love for her Pokémon that made her one of the most interesting companions that Ash has ever had.

10 Loves Every Type
May has caught many different types of Pokémon from little bugs to powerful fire chickens. Although she may have a favorite type like most characters in the anime it seems clear that she doesn’t discriminate based on it.
She is seen bonding with Pokémon of almost every Typing and it’s great to see more trainers that prefer every single type. More characters should have this trait instead of sticking to a single type of Pokémon because it makes them more interesting.
9 Her Dad Is A Gym Leader
May is an interesting character not just because if her own stunning personality traits but also because of her family tree. Her dad happens to be one of the most renowned gym leaders in all of the Hoenn region.
It comes as a surprise that May’s father is a gym leader because she definitely is nowhere near him in terms of strength when she sets out on her journey. Many players never knew that she actually has family in the Pokémon business, but now they do!
8 Fashion
May is seen to enjoy fashion at different points throughout the anime and this comes as no surprise to fans because she takes part in different contests throughout the show. Fashion is really one of her strengths!
She likes flashy outfits that will have the crowd in awe of her style and it is evident by what she wears to competitions and even just throughout her day to day life. It’s cool to see a character interested in fashion because most characters don’t care about clothing.
7 Wurmple
In the Pokémon anime, May caught herself a Wurmple while adventuring in the Hoenn region with Ash. It eventually evolved into a beautiful Beautifly, another Bug-Type Pokémon and one of the two possible evolutions for Wurmple.
When fans found out which Pokémon her Wurmple evolved into they weren’t especially shocked because she definitely prefers pretty Pokémon to tough ones. May and Wurmple are quite the team!
6 Second Female Companion
Misty will forever remain a fan-favorite to Pokémon anime viewers that watched her adventure with Ash throughout Kanto and Johto. However, eventually, it was time for her to say goodbye and that is why the character May was created.
She was the second traveling companion of Ash that was a girl and it seems like the two bonded very easily. She was definitely a favorite of fans during the Hoenn era and it’s no surprise, she’s full of personality!
5 Protagonist
May is the female protagonist of the Hoenn video games and she was always shown to have a unique clothing style. Both in the original Ruby and Sapphire and also the remakes she appeared the female protagonist.
Players enjoyed playing as her even though it made no real difference in terms of plot. Hopefully, she shows up again at some point in the future so fans can play as her again because that would be a real treat for her fans!
4 Pokémon Competitions
May was known to take place in competitions throughout the anime and also in the video games if the player wanted her to. She was interesting during these for a ton of reasons but mostly because she had such great Pokémon by her side and performed with them in unique ways.
Players and viewers that didn’t get a chance to see her perform should go back and watch some of her competitions because they were really fun. May had lots of personality, and that was part in due to her participation in these contests.
3 Torchic
May had a Torchic in the anime that eventually became her Pokémon partner and evolved into a powerful Blaziken. Players loved this fan-favorite chicken because of the powerful fire it created and it was great to see her partnered with one in the anime.
Fans should watch some of her fights if they haven’t already because the two of them were a force to be reckoned with. They really were a great team and because so many fans forgot about her partner Pokémon it deserves a spot on this list!
2 Her And Mudkips Don’t Mix
May has been shown to not easily be able to control the other starter Mudkip and she decided to pick Torchic for this reason. It’s funny to watch her try to command the little watery creature because she’s just so bad at it.
May prefers Fire-Type Pokémon to Water-Types and it’s no surprise because she does have a fiery personality. Characters would want to be careful before bringing up May’s least-favorite creature during conversations!
1 May Probably Won’t Ever Return
Fans of this amazing character may wonder if she’ll ever make a reappearance in the anime at some point, but they probably shouldn’t hold their breath. Although she was a fan favorite like other female characters, she probably won’t ever reappear due to the simple fact that she really isn’t anybody’s absolute favorite.
Serena or Misty are much more likely to return because they had more character development and although this upsets May’s fans it’s just the case that they have to accept. But at least she had multiple seasons to shine in!
