Wally was one of the rivals for the player in generation 3 and the remakes of the Hoenn games. Players loved this character because he was so likable and nice to the player and was a great step up from the more rude rivals in the previous installments of the series. There are lots of little things that people missed about Wally because he doesn’t have too many interactions with the player and most of them are pretty quick.
This list will lay out some of the best things about the character Wally that most players didn’t know and teach fans something new about one of the best rivals in Pokémon history. From his disease to his presence in Sun & Moon, here are 10 facts that most fans didn’t know about Wally!
10 Wally Was The First Rival To Not Pick A Traditional Starter Pokémon
Most rivals in the Pokémon games decide to go a similar direction as the player and choose one of the 3 starter Pokémon of the region. Wally decides to go a different route and catch his own starter in the wild, which ended up being a Ralts.
This was a nice change of pace for the player, however, unfortunately, they still had to fight their other rival who also picked a normal starter. Regardless, players were happy that they got some variety in terms of rival Pokémon teams.
9 He Is Extremely Ill
It is evident in the game that he has some kind of illness but players may not realize just how chronic it seems to be. It seems that he’s been sick for a large portion of his life and it is actually quite sad considering that it is a children’s game.
The message was presumably that people that were sick could still accomplish great things and these Pokémon games showed that magnificently. Hopefully, they decide to add more inspirational stories like this one in the future.
8 Wally Trained At The Battle Resort
After the events of the Hoenn games, Wally actually decided to train at the Battle Resort. He traveled there by boat and the player even gets a chance to rematch him if they so desire.
This was a great post-game story for the beloved character and fans were happy that they got to see him again after the main story. Hopefully, he’ll return for later post-game content because this was a great time!
7 Wally Is Present In The Battle Tree In Sun And Moon
In Pokémon Sun & Moon Wally is actually present again just like he was at the Battle Resort. He can be battled at the Battle Tree, and this was great because fans wanted to see their favorite character again after the generation 3 remakes.
He has a quite difficult team for the player to fight which is great because players only look for strong fights at the Battle Tree. There’s no doubt he’ll come back again perhaps even in generation 8 for another rematch with the player.
6 He Made An Appearance In The Pokémon Master Trailer With Silver And Hugh
In the Pokémon Masters anime trailer Wally actually made an appearance as a rival next to Silver and Hugh. This was great because fans hadn’t yet seen him in a TV series and he’s one of the best rivals of any generation.
Hopefully, Wally will show up in the future in an actual Pokémon TV series because he would be absolutely great on screen. Fans have been deprived of him for years in terms of the TV series so it would be great to see him truly make an appearance.
5 He Can Catch A Shiny Ralts
The Ralts that he catches initially when he begins his journey can actually be shiny, however, even if it is in the initial battle it won’t be later on in the game. This was an oversight by the developers but it’s fun to theorize how canonically his creature went from being shiny to not.
Perhaps he didn’t like his initial Ralts so he decided to let it go and catch a new Pokémon. Regardless of if there’s a reason or not this is a cool tidbit about Wally’s favorite partner Pokémon that most fans don’t know.
4 The Protagonist Helps Him Start His Journey
The player is actually the person that teaches Wally how to catch Pokémon. Most players that have played the generation 3 games recently may already know this fact however it’s easily forgotten because of how long ago they came out.
When Wally is catching his first Pokémon the protagonist takes him out the catch it and teach him how to battle a wild creature. This was a great act of friendship that unfortunately was quickly forgotten and it was one of the best scenes in the game because finally instead of somebody teaching the player, they got to teach a character instead!
3 Wally Introduces The PlayNav In ORAS
This piece of technology was extremely useful in the game because it allowed the player to use online functionality. It is an essential piece of technology and the fact that Wally is the one that gives it to the player is actually really cool and nice of him.
A lot of rivals are known for being rude and not helpful towards the player and this was a breath of fresh air within the Pokémon games. Hopefully, more rivals do nice things like this in the future and it looks like it’s going that way because they seem to be nicer in current games than they were in the first few generations.
2 His Gallade Can Mega Evolve
His favorite Pokémon in generation 6 can actually Mega Evolve. This is an extremely tough battle when the player has to face it because Wally has trained it very well and has only the strongest moves in its arsenal.
Luckily the player will be prepared because they know that he has one of Ralt’s evolutions, however it is still quite a difficult battle and players should come prepared for a Mega Evolution. This is a battle from the remakes fans will not soon forget!
1 Wally Gets All Eight Badges Before The Player
This is surprising because of how much stronger the player is compared to Wally, however, he actually gets all the gym badges before the player manages to. Wally must be very powerful or at least quick on his feet if he’s able to beat all the gym leaders that quickly.
He is definitely talented without a doubt, and although he may not be as good as the protagonist, he is still a powerful trainer that should be respected. Because of how small his appearance is outside of battle he doesn’t seem too intimidating, but once he’s in a battle he’s ready to go!
