Pokémon Black & White introduced players to Unova, an interesting region filled with ancient legends and extremely powerful Pokémon. It was the first region that added a “season mechanic”, which modified the map to show the 4 different seasons of the year.
Seeing that Game Freak doesn’t have plans to remake the Gen 4 games, it’s quite likely that players won’t see a remake of the Unova games for a long time. But don’t get sad! We can still replay the Pokémon White & Black and their sequels and laugh at a few memes about them, here are some of them!
10 Pokémon Gray Sounded Better
Way before the Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 games were announced, fans thought that Game Freak was going to release another more developed game called “Pokémon Gray”. At that time, it was easy to understand why fans thought that Game Freak would name a game like that, seeing that they usually released a third game that was named differently, as was Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum.
9 All Right, Then Keep Your Secrets
Pokéballs are one of the most wonderful pieces of technologies ever created, as it’s capable of catching Pokémon as big as a whale, quite literally, and store them without needing to change its shape or size.
They’re also very compact, and can even reduce their size if the trainer needs to store them. Now, that girl is obviously playing a joke on the trainer, as she probably has her Pokéballs floating around nearby.
8 The Tension Rises
One of the best things that the Unova games have, is that they implemented a new mechanic that changed a Gym’s leader theme song when they were on their last Pokémon. This was a well-received mechanic, as it meant that a Gym Leader’s last Pokémon was usually their strongest one. This mechanic is similar to that of classic fighting games where the music sped up when the match was on its last round.
7 Have Mercy
In the original Unova games, players went on an adventure with Cheren, who started out as a rival and ended up being a good friend. At some point in time between the original games and their sequels, Cheren decided that he wanted to be a Gym Leader.
It’s a relief that he just uses some spare Pokémon instead of his original from Pokémon Black & White, as it’d be far too powerful for trainers who just got their first Pokémon. According to Pokémon’s lore, Gym Leaders usually have access to less powerful teams, as using their more powerful team is frowned upon.
6 N Became The Very Best
Natural Harmonia Gropius, or simply N, is a very enigmatic character and one of the most developed villains of the Pokémon games. He’s the main antagonist of the original Black & White games and is a character with strong -although radical- ideals. It’s funny how he beats the Unova’s Champion without much effort just to make a point, sure, he used a legendary Pokémon, but still.
5 Steven Being Steven
Steven Stone is (or was, the Pokémon games have a lot of story-lines) the Hoenn’s Pokémon Champion, and he appears at Unova’s Champion Tournament. Steven is a big rock nerd, which is why he’s usually traveling around the world exploring caves, mines, and places where he can find rare rocks. It’s funny how Steven is so obsessed with rocks that he still thinks about them at the Champion’s Tournament, going so far as asking if emeralds can be mined in Driftveil City.
4 They Are Aware Now
If you’ve played Pokémon games long enough, then you’re already aware that obstacles are just ways of holding back players until they advance further into the story. It’s very frustrating that the Pokémon world can’t be explored freely.
However, exploring a region without restriction would be a bad idea for new trainers, as they’d probably end up fainted due to encounters with far stronger Pokémon. Still, it feels kind of cheap to block a path with self-aware NPCs.
3 So That’s Why They’re Grunts
Have you ever wondered why criminals gangs like the Team Rocket or Team Plasma always play by the rules? They never throw more than one Pokémon or try to outnumber the player. It’s pretty nice of them, but it’s perplexing how their pals always stay close but never intervene in their battles, even when they’re obviously being beaten by a 10-year-old.
2 He Likes Shorts Too!
One of the youngsters found in the Pinwheel Forest has one of the weirdest quotes of the games, as he tells you that he’s wearing shorts to “toughen up his kneecaps”. Longtime fans of the franchise know that youngsters like to wear shorts for some reason.
It all started in the Red & Blue games when a trainer from the youngster class named Ben says the quote “I Like To Wear Shorts! They’re comfy and easy to wear!”, which over time evolved into one of the most famous Pokémon memes.
1 Curious Similarities
Keldeo is one of the least remembered legendary Pokémon of the series. He only appears in a single movie and could only be obtainable via events, so it’s easy to see why few fans know or remember him.
In fact, it’s quite likely that he has had more time to shine in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate than in the Pokémon games, as he’s one of the possible Pokémon that can come out of a Pokéball. Maybe Game Freak tried to reuse the theme of a sword themed quadrupedal Pokémon with Zacian after seeing how Keldeo went almost unnoticed.
