The first type to ever reach the Pokédex entry of the hundreds of pocket monsters in the world of Pokémon. The grass type is the most common type, that many players at first didn’t care to choose as a starter Pokémon (sorry Bulbasaur) given that you had an end result choice of getting a fire breathing dragon-like Charizard or a giant turtle that can shoot water from its cannons in Blastoise. But, over time, the grass-type Pokémon gained a lot more respect and a lot more cool points than their starter counterparts.
Traditionally given the grassy nature of many Pokémon, a lot them derive and inspired by plant-based flowers and crops. This, however, doesn’t make them less interesting the slightest as the creativity for these veterinarians’ best friend (or worst enemy depending on who you ask) has evolved over the decades, some good and some bad. Let’s take a look at some of the coolest and some of the worst designed Pokémon of the grass types.
10 Coolest: Tropius
Tropius from generation three is a big boy. Combining type grass and flying type, Tropius looks a mix of Brachiosaurus and a tropical tree put together. Don’t be its size, this grassy dino can utilize its leaf-based wings to soar above the skies. Adding its design is a grassy helmet that covers its head and banana-like fruit just under its chin, which we wouldn’t be recommending picking by its sure mass and look, but it is relatively harmless to humans as it only eats fruit. What a relief.
9 Worst: Bellsprout
Bellsprout is a generic-looking pokemon you would typically find on the grassy routes on your Pokémon adventure as it’s just a simple plant. The design is two leaves of each side and the extending stem that makes up the body, at the center of its design is the yellow balloon-shaped head with eyes and opening mouth that looks like it says, “Oooooo!” like you’ve done something wrong, like accidentally stepping on its family while walking through the grassy field. We are sorry that your design doesn’t stand out enough Bellsprout.
8 Coolest: Bellossom
Oh, how cute! Bellossom is the evolution to Gloom if you decide to use the Sun Stone instead of leveling up to Vileplume (which isn’t a bad choice either). Bellossom has a very unique decide that is reminiscent of the hula dancers of Hawaii.
Pokémon: 10 Grass-Type Moves Stronger Than Solar Beam, Ranked
The Pokémon has two red flower petals on its head and leaves on it’s half body that makes up a grassy skirt. The design is cute and cool with a very creative concept for this grassy bundle of dancing and singing cuteness. Wouldn’t mind having one of these shaking on our car dashboard.
7 Worst: Dhelmise
Arrr…maties where is my booty? That’s what you were probably thinking, by looking at the anchor and ship wheel hybrid. It’s only fitting that this is a ghost grass-type Pokémon because the design looks like something that was forgotten in the depths of the ocean. This creature has a rusty and broken look to it with one working eye and covered in seaweed, which is very unusual and out of place. It seems like it needs to be more restored in an antique shop than going to the Poké Center for healing.
6 Coolest: Virizion
Apart from the Swords of Justice trio from generation five of Pokémon Black and White. This legendary has an antelope look this beautiful designed Pokémon. Highlighted with grassy leaf fur and creme body with pink tips at the end of its leaf points. We would be amazed to see something so gorgeous in the wild. It’s feet look like it’s wearing its nature boots. This Pokémon proves that legendaries don’t have to be giant hulking creatures that roam the regions, but more elegant creatures that make you appreciate the beauties of nature even more.
5 Worst: Tangela
One of the most unusual Pokémon on this list. Tangela is something that you either fear to see or curious to see. It just looks like a tangled mess – pun intended. The real question is “What is underneath all the vines?” Probably one of the biggest mysteries in all of Pokémon. Its design doesn’t leave many answers besides there are clearly eyes and red boots attached to this bizarre creature. Maybe it was a lost kid that slowly got transformed by the woods? We may never know.
4 Coolest: Rillaboom
Rillaboom is a new final starter evolution from Pokémon Sword and Shield. This giant gorilla is probably the closes thing to Donkey Kong making an appearance in a Pokemon game. It even comes with a wooden bass drum…Donkey Konga anyone? Its hair is made of many leaves that surround its wrists and waist as well.
Rillaboom looks like an absolute rocker of an ape that gouges on bananas, drinks nectar, and eats fruit while hanging out with Tarzan. You can tell by its Gigantamax (which consists of a whole tropical drum set) that it can be the life of the party in any jungle.
3 Worst: Alolan Exeggutor
What is not to say about this embarrassing Alolan design for Exeggutor. We have to admit that the evolution chain from Exeggcute (which just a bunch of eggs in a pile) to Exeggutor (which is just a three-headed palm tree) isn’t the best looking designed Pokémon from the series but to add this bizarre addition to the mix is simply mind-numbing.
The Alolan design for Exeggutor is an Exeggutor with a longer neck and a weird face for a tail. How on Earth that this considered a Dragon-type, but base Charizard isn’t is beyond explanation. At least it looks like a palm tree this time around.
2 Coolest: Leafeon
Over the many decades of the Pokémon generation, Eevee was known to have multiple forms, starting from the three elemental forms of Jolteon, Flareon, and Vaporeon to more forms along the way. During the fourth generation, Eevee evolves into Leafeon while near a Moss Rock.
Leafeon is a cool addition to the eight wonders of Eevee. Its design is, of course, a grass-based organic look with leaf-like ears, tail, and hair growing along its body, along with brown color inside of its ears, feet, and eyes. It’s a super-effective design, that is beautiful as the rest of its evolutionary counterparts.
1 Worst: Applin & Its Evolutions
Applin has a very simple look, it’s basically an apple. It does have a worm as a tail and the leaves as its eyes, but this is one of the worst grass-type designs. It’s doesn’t get better either as the evolutions whether you decide Flapple or Appletun gives you a very bad look as well.
Flapple is simply a dragon within an apple and Appletun, a giant dragon with a hump with what looks like an apple pie on top of it. The problem is the laziness of the design that could have been better and more appealing. We will pass on these apples and try to snag some of those Tropius bananas instead.
