Pokémon Black & White, ever since their release, haven’t received the love they deserve for what they did for the franchise. Pokémon as a series has always done a great job of delivering enough to get the fans excited but never matching the creative output of the first games. This was the case up until the Unova region of Pokémon Black & White where they unveiled 150 new creatures, many of which have gone overlooked. It’s time to take a look at and rank the 5 scariest and 5 most adorable pocket monsters from Pokémon Black & White.

10 Scary: Durant

At first glance, it may seem odd that a Pokémon inspired by ants would be considered scary, but Durant breaks the mold in that way. First, you have to take into account that its body is covered in a steel-like coating that not only makes it safe from predators, but it also makes the mandibles it bites with extremely powerful. Alone they can be quite dangerous to small children and those who don’t see an attack coming, but the terrifying thing is that they often attack in groups and can quickly become overwhelming. The weight of their armor can suffocate their predators.

9 Adorable: Drilbur

Moles aren’t necessarily the types of animals people point to when discussing the cutest critters in existence, put Drilbur makes it work. This tiny ground dweller seems to always be sporting a smile, which pairs nicely with its cute button nose and endearing eyes. It also helps that it has a tiny body sandwiched between its large pair of digging claws resting at the end of each of its arms. If moles are ever considered cute it’s often because of the “so ugly, they’re cute” philosophy, but Drilbur is adorable in all of the traditional ways.

8 Scary: Ferrothorn

Often it’s the look of something that can instill fear in people, and has nothing to do with the actual power or possible actions of said thing. Ferrothorn may look the part as it’s very intimidating and sports a lot of spikes and prickly bits that seem uncomfortable to come in contact with, but it also backs up its appearance.

They are known to reside in caves and will plant themselves upon the ceilings. If they feel threatened or notice something moving below them they will drop steel spikes down from the rooftops. It seems like proper headgear isn’t just precautionary, it could be life-saving.

7 Adorable: Lillipup

Now it’s time for the obligatory inclusion of a canine or feline on the list. Lillipup is the resident base form puppy of the Unova region and encompasses the cutest parts of the Yorkshire Terrier dog breed. It’s known to have a great amount of bravery, but if it feels like there’s no chance of succeeding it will intelligently flee before sustaining serious injuries. The massive amounts of fur on its face don’t only provide a great focal point for cuddling, but it allows Lillipup to notice subtle changes in the surrounding environment.

6 Scary: Garbodor

This entry may come as a shocker as Garbodor is now an internet meme for those who love to criticize the creative of the franchise throughout the years. Yes, the idea of a living pile of garbage is a bit outlandish, but thinking about this creature in the real-world can turn those laughs into cautionary chuckles. It can produce and secret various kinds of gases and poisons based on the types of garbage it consumes. The way it hunts is by locking down its prey with one hand and covering their body in a poisonous liquid that immobilizes the creature.

5 Adorable: Tepig

It should come as no surprise that one of the three starter Pokémon from the Unova region made the list. Out of the three, it was a pretty easy choice to go with Tepig. Not only is it a tiny baby pig imbued with Fire-type abilities, but it also has a curly little tail that’s reminiscent of the Pokémon Spoink from the Hoenn region.

Like real-life pigs, Tepig starts as a small and adorable creature and will quickly grow into a large animal that needs more space and food than the average person can provide. Thankfully, in the world of Pokémon a creature holding an Everstone will stay the same and never evolve.

4 Scary: Whirlipede

Looking at Whirlipede an image of a living tire pops into mind and can seem a bit silly in terms of it being a creature you should fear. Once you learn that it can wheel around at incredible speeds and that the spikes protruding from its body are poisonous, you start to understand why it’s more dangerous than it looks. Whirlipede also isn’t afraid to hurl its body into objects and doesn’t think twice considering it can’t get hurt thanks to the hard shell that encompasses its body. It does a great job at communicating visually that it wants to be left alone.

3 Adorable: Minccino

Kids around the world may feel indifferent about school, but almost all of them love when the regional animal expert comes to town and brings their exotic collection of creatures. One of these creatures that built a reputation with kids was the incredibly soft Chinchilla. Minccino, the Pokémon, in many ways seems like the fictional embodiment of a Chinchilla. On top of being a small rodent with a light grey fur coloring, it also keeps clean through self-cleaning, a process in which the Chinchillas also do by rolling around in sand.

2 Scary: Cofagrigus

A Pokémon that resembles a coffin seems like an easy call for it being the scariest creature in its region, but Cofagrigus is much more than a visual scare. This Ghost-type entity will swallow unsuspecting victims who get too close and will turn them into mummies.

Cofagrigus most commonly target grave robbers who tend to mistake them for real coffins. Cofagrigus are made of real gold that covers their entire body and are depicted in ancient tomb paintings and etchings as a sign of wealth among kings.

1 Adorable: Emolga

There’s no denying the fact that Emolga is the 5th generation’s clone of Pikachu. Every generation has one, but unlike the others, Emolga manages to have a distinct and interesting enough design that it can set itself apart. The electric and flying dual-type is super adorable as it mixes the best design elements of Pikachu and the inspiration of flying squirrels. Its body isn’t overly complicated and the mashup of simple shapes, an adorable face, and sleek little wings make it visually appealing to almost everyone.
