With the exception of Sword & Shield, each generation of Pokémon has included an official Elite Four whom the player must defeat before challenging the Champion of the region. Like Gym Leaders, each of the twenty-eight Elite Four members specializes in certain types and come prepared with some of the strongest Pokémon in the Pokédex.

While the Elite Four members are known to be the strongest trainers of their respective region, it can be difficult albeit interesting to gauge how they’d compare against one another. Whether they have a powerful team or clever battle strategies, the best of the best can be ranked accordingly.

28 Hala

Hala is the Fighting-type specialist of the Alola Region’s Elite Four. With a lack of variation in his team, all of his Pokémon share the common weaknesses of Flying, Fairy, and Psychic-type attacks.

27 Kahili

Kahili is the only Elite Four member who specializes in Flying-type Pokémon. Her team composition, however, does not include the best Flying-types out there. Each of her party members can be shot down with a quick Electric attack.

26 Koga

After moving on from being a Kanto Gym Leader, Koga joins the Johto Region’s Elite Four. There, he uses a team of Poison-types who lack in sheer offensive and instead rely more on poisoning and stalling out the opponent.

25 Olivia

Olivia is the sole Rock-type specialist amongst the Elite Four members. Her team varies slightly between games, but her Lycanroc remains as her signature Pokémon with the handy Rockium Z.

24 Acerola

Ghost-type specialists are common in the Elite Four, but Acerola is perhaps the most underwhelming amongst her fellow ghost lovers. Any Dark-type Pokémon should be able to tear through her team with relative ease.

23 Siebold

Despite the fact that Water is the most common type in the game, Siebold is the only Elite Four member who specializes in Water Pokémon. His team may have a glaring weakness to Grass and Electric attacks, but his four Pokémon have the means to fight back with.

22 Lorelei

Siebold might be the only official Water-type specialist, but Gen I’s Lorelei has plenty of dual Water-types that go hand in hand with her Ice-type specialty. With Dewgong, Cloyster, and Lapras as her Ice/Water-types, Lorelei can easily counter Fire-types.

21 Will

Psychic-type Pokémon are known for their high Special Attack and Special Defense, and that’s exactly what Will’s team is built around. His Bronzong and Grumpig have good special bulk, while the rest of his team focuses more on offensive special damage.

20 Karen

Prior to the introduction of Fairy-types, Dark-type Pokémon only had two weaknesses in Bug and Fighting.

As an Elite Four member of the Johto Region, Karen’s Dark team never has to worry about Fairy-types. Instead, she has perfect counters to Bug and Fighting-types.

19 Bruno

Bruno is the designated Fighting-type specialist of the first two generations. His Machamp and Lucario are two of the best when it comes to Fighting-types.

18 Glacia

Glacia’s Ice team has power behind with the likes of Abomasnow and Mega Glalie, but Ice-types naturally carry many defensive weaknesses. With four big weaknesses, Galcia can be easily defeated.

17 Drasna

Dragon-type Pokémon are known to be fierce and powerful all-around. Naturally, a Dragon-type specialist like Drasna has a decent team, but it could be better with stronger Dragons like Salamence or Garchomp.

16 Sidney

In addition to having a well-rounded team of Dark-types, Sidney has a few tricks up his sleeve. His Mega Absol is his main source of damage output, while his Zoroark can confuse the opponent with its signature Ability, Illusion.

15 Aaron

Although Bug-type Pokémon don’t have the best reputation when it comes to power or defense, Aaron and his Bug-types should not be underestimated. The player needs to be ready to deal with the likes of a speedy Yanmega and fierce Scizor.

14 Lucian

Lucian’s Psychic team is similar to Will’s with a Bronzong and Gardevior’s male counterpart, Gallade. However, Lucian also has two other great special attackers in Alakazam and Espeon.

13 Flint

As one of the few Fire-type specialists amongst the Elite Four members, Flint has the power of the sun on his side. If one of his Pokémon uses Sunny Day, this will power up the rest of his team’s Fire-type attacks.

12 Shauntal

Shauntal’s entire team can certainly be a hassle to face, but her two biggest threats are Gengar and Chandelure. Gengar serves as Shauntal’s speedy glass cannon, while Chandelure has an even high Special Attack stat and a little more bulk behind it.

11 Bertha

As a Ground-type specialist, it makes sense for Bertha to prioritize the weather conditions in battle.

With her Hippowdon’s handy Sand Stream Ability, she can set up a sandstorm to chip away at her opponent’s health while also boosting the Special Defense of her Rock-types.

10 Malva

Malva may only have four Pokémon in her party, but there is no weak link. Pyroar and Chandelure are reliable special attackers, Torkoal is the defensive tank, and Talonflame is the speedy physical attacker.

9 Wikstrom

Like Malva, Wikstrom has four solid party members who serve different purposes. His Klefki takes advantage of its Prankster Ability to obstruct the opponent, Probopass is extremely defensive all around, while Scizor and Aegislash are great offensive attackers.
