One of the research tasks during Pokémon GO’s Sinnoh Throwback Event requires trainers to catch a ground-type Pokémon. Here’s how to get it done.

This week marks the fourth and final throwback event in Pokémon GO. Each week, trainers have been able to revisit various regions from the franchise via nine different levels of challenges. Each level features three research tasks, and completing them will earn players rewards and encounters.

A bulk of the challenges revolve around trainers having to catch Pokémon of a particular type. During this week’s Sinnoh event, one of the tasks during the fourth level of challenges requires trainers to find and catch a ground-type Pokémon before they can move on. Sounds simple on the surface, but with Sinnoh Pokémon stealing the spotlight this week, it is easier said than done to complete this one.

That’s because of all the Pokémon in Gen IV, only two of them are ground-types that appear in the wild in Pokémon GO right now. Even worse, one of those ground-types is Gible which trainers will know are notoriously hard to find in the wild. Even Hippopotas, the other ground-type, isn’t all that common. There are ways trainers can up their chances of finding a ground-type this week though, ensuring that research gets done.

Playing in GO Battle League can get the job done. Two of the reward encounters for winning battles and ranking up right now are Stunfisk and Larvitar. They might not be from the Sinnoh region, but they are ground-type Pokémon so they count. Hippowdon, the evolved form of Hippopotas, is also popping up in four-star raids this week. Trainers with the ability to take it down can take that route to get the research done.

Although they’re not made of metal, Magentic Lures might also help attract a ground-type to a trainer. Onix and Alolan Diglett can both be drawn in by a lure of this type and are both ground-type Pokémon. Other than that, our only recommendation is to stick to parks, woods, farms, and parking lots, provided you can do so while maintaining a safe social distance. Ground-type Pokémon are more likely to spawn in these areas.
