The Pokémon series is one that’s always surprising fans. What is Game Freak working on right now? Who knows! It could be a new generation, Sinnoh remakes, or an idea that’s been floating around for some time, Let’s Go Johto games. While they are divisive, there are a few reasons these games have to happen, but also a few as to why they shouldn’t exist. Let’s get into it.
10 Need Them: It’s Been Awhile Since We’ve Seen Johto
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the Johto Region. Inspired by Japanese culture, Johto is one of the most distinct regions in the series. Its architecture alone is super inspired and interesting. We haven’t seen the Johto Region in quite some time, since the DS era in fact, so seeing this lush region make a return in full 3D would be fantastic.
9 Shouldn’t Exist: We Need Sinnoh, Too
Let’s not forget, however, that the main goal is still Sinnoh remakes first and foremost!
The fanbase has been trying to get these games for so long, and we’ve technically been waiting on Sinnoh remakes longer than Johto, even if it is only by a year or so. Either way, as of right now, Sinnoh remakes would be much preferred by most Pokémon fans.
8 Need Them: Possible Sinnoh Connections
Come to think of it, however, Sinnoh and Johto are very connected when it comes to the lore. The Sinjoh Ruins are a cultural landmark for both locations. If we got Johto remakes first, there is a chance that fans could get a little taste of Sinnoh in the titles.
Pipedream, replace Sinnoh as the postgame content for Johto instead of Kanto. Eh, eh? It would never happen, but we can dream.
7 Shouldn’t Exist: Too Easy
The Let’s Go games are, unfortunately, incredibly easy. There’s very little challenge when it comes to completing the games, which makes Let’s Go titles somewhat disappointing in the end. Unless there were some major reworks to the Let’s Go formula, the games just wouldn’t provide enough of a challenge to be a good time.
6 Need Them: The Fire Soundtrack
Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver had one of the best soundtracks out there, period. It is so good, and we need to get that entire soundtrack remastered for the Switch. There are so many great tracks, and since the last time we heard them all was in the DS era, meaning that there is a lot to bring back in a big way. Bring back Hoenn and Sinnoh Sounds too, please.
5 Shouldn’t Exist: We Should Move Forward
Between Diamond & Pearl remakes and Let’s Go Johto, there are just too many remakes happening. Sure, these games are still 100% hypothetical, but it’s very important that the Pokémon franchise continues to move forward, especially with all the criticisms that players have levied at Sword & Shield. If we move to a new generation, there’s a chance that some of those problems will be addressed. If we’re stuck on remakes, then we’re less likely to see change.
4 Need Them: Let’s Go Allows For New Things
The Let’s Go brand really isn’t fully defined, as there’s only been one game in the sub-series as of now. This means that when Game Freak creates another Let’s Go game, they have a chance to experiment, to try new things.
If Game Freak does pursue a Let’s Go Johto, they have the chance to really get creative, to try things they haven’t before. This, of course, is never a bad thing. The more that Game Freak is allowed to mess around with new ideas, the better their games will be for it.
3 Shouldn’t Exist: The Development Time
Making a brand new video game is never an easy task. It takes money, a huge staff, and most of all, time. It takes years to develop video games, and do we really want Game Freak sinking a bunch of resources into two Let’s Go games over something brand new? Is it really worth it in the end? Would you rather have generation nine in say, 2022, or in 2024? One game makes a big difference.
2 Need Them: It’s Small Scale (not as hard as new games)
At the same time, however, a Let’s Go Johto game set isn’t going to be nearly as difficult to create as brand new entries in the series. They’ve already got the engine for the games, the entire post-game was created very recently, they wouldn’t require as many resources to get off the ground as full sequels to Sword & Shield would.
1 Shouldn’t Exist: The Let’s Go Series As A Whole
In the end, Let’s Go Johto just isn’t worth what it would cost. Fans want new entries and generation four remakes. Let’s Go really wasn’t what anyone was looking for back in 2018, and it isn’t what we want in 2020 or 2021 either. Let’s let go of Let’s Go for a bit, and for now, focus on the future instead.
