Along with the introduction to the island-inspired region of Alola, the sixth generation of Pokémon strayed away from the traditional Gym setup and brought a new game-changing battle feature to the table. Rather than winning Gym Badges from Gym Leaders, trainers in the Alola Region earn Z-Crystals after completing Island Trials and certain story events.
These Z-Crystals are used together with a trainer’s Z-Ring to perform power Z-Moves. Individual Z-Crystals and Z-Moves are designated for certain types or species, which only makes them more unique and fun to use. And while all Z-Moves have their own perks, some are exceptionally stellar and on a level of their own.
10 Let’s Snuggle Forever
With an innocent name like “Let’s Snuggle Forever,” one would expect a wholesome Z-Move where no one gets hurt and everyone can be best of friends. Unfortunately, that is the exact opposite of what happens when the mysterious Mimikyu uses its signature Z-Move.
As an unexpected attack, the tiny Mimikyu will suddenly lunge out and enlarge its ragged Pikachu disguise to engulf its victim beneath it. Trapped and caught in Mimikyu’s wrath, the victim is brutally beaten by the Ghost/Fairy Pokémon so that they can perhaps snuggle forever in the afterlife.
9 Stoked Sparksurfer
As an added bonus of the Alola Region, some of the original Kantonian Pokémon were discovered to also have an alternate Alolan form. One great example is Alolan Raichu, who gained not only a Psychic-tying but also a neat surfboard in the form of its own tail.
This surfboard is a nod to both the island-themed Alola and the iconic Surfing Pikachu, while also serving as the focus of Alolan Raichu’s Z-Move, Stoked Sparksurfer. In this Z-Move, Alolan Raichu rides the electric current right into its opponent, leaving them paralyzed.
8 Clangorous Soulblaze
Kommo-o has a large presence in the Alola Region with its roles as the generation’s pseudo-legendary Pokémon and one of the mighty Totem Pokémon of the Island Trials. Its unique scaly design plays into its pool of moves like Clanging Scales, Clangorous Soul, and its Z-Move, Clangorous Soulblaze.
The powered-up version of Clanging Scales, Clangorous Soulblaze, deals massive damage to opponents while also boosting all of Kommo-o’s stats by one stage each. This puts the pseudo-legendary in a great situation and sets it up to continue sweeping away at the opposing team.
7 Pulverizing Pancake
Snorlax is everyone’s favorite sleepyhead from the first generation of Pokémon. It is best known for its big belly and blocking paths while taking long naps. Its Z-Move, Pulverizing Pancake, hilariously wakes the snoozing Pokémon up for the smackdown of the century.
When the power of Snorlium Z is called forth, Snorlax wakes up in an instant and charges fiercely toward its opponent. Once it has gained enough speed and is in range, Snorlax jumps up and allows gravity to slam its gigantic body onto the poor soul waiting beneath it.
6 Splintered Stormshards
With all the buzz about Ash Ketchum’s first championship title, Lycanroc rose to fame as the Pokémon responsible for securing the victory in Ash’s final battle against Gladion’s Lycanroc. After a well-fought battle, Ash’s Lycanroc ultimately won with a clever Counter to end all Counters. That being said, Lycanroc has a Z-Move, Splintered Stormshards, that is even stronger than Counter.
To use Splintered Stormshards, Lycanroc takes control of large jagged stones from the earth and points them all toward its opponent. Altogether, the stones strike the opponent who has nowhere to run.
5 Genesis Supernova
Mew is a mythical psychic Pokémon whose adorable pink appearance should not mislead you from all of the incredible powers it is capable of. As if Mew wasn’t already one of the greatest Pokémon out there, it was also given a Z-Move to seal the deal.
Genesis Supernova takes little bubbles of psychic energy and merges them into one gigantic bubble to be hurled directly at the opponent as if it were a falling meteor. Coincidentally, Mew is remembered for its iconic and adorable scene with bubbles in the very first Pokémon movie.
4 Guardian Of Alola
In the Alola Region, there are four guardian deity Pokémon, known as the tapu, who watch over the four Alolan Islands. Tapu Koko guards Melemele, Tapu Lele guards Akala, Tapu Bulu guards Ula’ula, and Tapu Fini guards Poni Island. Each of these Tapu are dual Fairy-types and share the Z-Move, Guardian of Alola.
Guardian of Alola summons a giant headless figure to which the Tapu becomes the head. In control of the giant being, the Tapu slams its mighty fist down onto the opponent to deal a guaranteed 75% of their current HP.
3 Extreme Evoboost
Out of all the Z-Moves, the most wholesome one has to belong to Eevee, the Pokémon with many evolutions. As of the seventh generation where Z-Moves are used, Eevee has eight different evolutions who all join forces to help their little one out.
Summoned by the power of the Eevium Z, Jolteon, Flareon, Vaporeon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon each bless Eevee with a little bit of their own powers. From this, Eevee gets an impressive power-up that boosts all of its stats by two whole stages, therefore making Eevee a true unevolved threat.
2 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt
As opposed to the typical Pikachu that we know and love, rare versions of “Pikachu in a cap” were distributed during the time of Sun & Moon’s generation. These Pikachu sport Ash’s many caps over the years, look fashionably adorable, and earned themselves a shocking Z-Move, 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt.
To gather enough electricity, Pikachu jumps into the air and absorbs volts from the thunderclouds above. Perhaps mimicking Ash’s Pikachu’s seemingly unbeatable Electric attacks, this Pikachu shocks its foe with literally 10,000,000 volts of electricity and then proceeds to blow up the foe as if the shock was not enough.
1 Light That Burns The Sky
Due to its many forms and relationship with Solgaleo and Lunala, Necrozma is a fascinating Legendary Pokémon whose moves are based around light. When it fuses with either Solgaleo or Lunala and uses Ultra Burst, it reaches its full potential as Ultra Necrozma. As Ultra Necrozma, it can use its killer Z-Move, Light that Burns the Sky.
Drawing light energy from the world, Ultra Necrozma creates a huge swirling ball of light before blasting its opponent with an insane amount of energy that is powerful enough to burn even the sky.
