Generation 1 of Pokémon had many different characters, and some of them were unfortunately underdeveloped in terms of personality and character traits. The gym leaders in generation 1 are all very distinct and have different ways of raising Pokémon from one another. Some gym leaders in generation 1 are also very nostalgic such as Brock.
Fans will find that gym leaders such as Misty and Koga are different from each other fundamentally, and that adds unique character to the different gyms in the Kanto region. With so many interesting gyms introduced with each new region, Kanto can still stand out as one of the most interesting and unique in terms of gym leaders.
8 Erika - Grass-Type Gym Leader
Erika is regarded by her fans as the “Nature-Loving Princess.” Erika raises Grass-type Pokémon, and although she seems to have an interesting gym on first sight, she doesn’t have much character personality to her. Fans do enjoy this character because her gym layout is unique, and her Pokémon are powerful; however, that does not build an interesting character. Erika will only catch a creature if she thinks that it is beautiful and elegant.
Erika had a line of perfume in the anime, and a lot of fans wish that this plot carried over to the generation 1 games. Usually, Erika is regarded as the most boring gym leader in the Kanto region; it’s no surprise because there is very little dialogue with her and about her in general.
7 Brock - Rock-Type Gym Leader
Brock may have been one of the main characters in the anime for a long time; however, he is very lackluster inside of the Kanto video games.
Brock has very weak Pokémon, and players will usually easily defeat him without much effort regardless of their starter Pokémon. There is also only one grunt residing within Brock’s gym, and this means that there is less dialogue that talks about the gym leader. Overall, Brock was one of the most boring gym leaders ever to be introduced, and it’s almost surprising that he became a main character in the anime. At least Brock had more personality in the anime!
6 Sabrina - Psychic-Type Gym Leader
Sabrina had a lot of plot within the anime because Ash’s friends were captured by her. In the video games, however, Sabrina has a fascinating gym but very little character traits that set her apart from other gym leaders.
Players can speak with Sabrina briefly before battling with her, and although her Psychic-type Pokémon make her an interesting gym leader, she doesn’t stand out much in terms of personality traits. Sabrina is a shy and quiet person that has trouble communicating her feelings. Hopefully, if Sabrina gets a cameo in the future, she will be more fleshed out.
5 Koga - Poison-Type Gym Leader
Koga is a very powerful and difficult to defeat gym leader in generation 1. Koga is known to employ his signature move, Toxic, on his enemies and easily defeat them within a battle.
However, regardless of how strong Koga is in terms of Pokémon battling, he has a very barren personality that will make players dislike and forget about him quickly. The only thing that stands out about Koga is his ninja outfit and atmosphere. Koga never caught fan’s interest because the developers didn’t add anything interesting about this character into the generation 1 games.
4 Giovanni - Ground-Type Gym Leader
Giovanni is one of the most important characters in generation 1 of Pokémon because he’s an evil team leader, and he’s also the final gym leader for players to defeat in Kanto. He also raises a plethora of different Pokémon that add a unique twist since gym battles are usually centered around one type, although Giovanni does prefer Ground-Type creatures.
Giovanni has a flat personality, and it isn’t explored much in terms of his motivations with Team Rocket or Pokémon battling. Fans were upset when they didn’t get much character depth from Giovanni because he is such a major person in the Kanto region.
3 Misty - Water-Type Gym Leader
Misty is a Water-type gym leader, and she is very well known for her role in the anime when she traveled with Ash. This Water-type trainer has interesting dialogue and a distinct personality that sets her apart from some of the older gym leaders within Kanto. Misty’s grunts hold her to high regard, more so than with other gym leaders.
Misty was one of the best traveling companions that Ash has ever had because she always treated him in a constructive, but ultimately caring manner. Fans will find that Misty has a bright personality that can be snarky at times, but overall she is friendly. Hopefully, Misty is featured more in the future, even though she already had a lot of screen time in the anime.
2 Blaine - Fire-Type Gym Leader
Blaine is stationed on Cinnabar Island as a Fire-type gym leader. He prefers to play fun games with his competitors within his gym and has one of the most memorable gym puzzles in the first few generations of Pokémon. Blaine likes to quiz his competitors before battling them.
Blaine also as a very fiery personality that can keep crowds entertained for hours, and characters enjoy interacting with him because he is wacky. It would be interesting to see Blaine come back in a future Pokémon game with a new plot because he is one of the only gym leaders in generation 1 that fans actually take an interest in even after defeating him.
1 Lt. Surge - Electric-Type Gym Leader
There is so much personality to Lieutenant Surge that it almost is surprising. Surge was both relevant in the anime when Pikachu battled Raichu and in the games as the third gym leader in the Kanto region. Surge acts tough towards his competitors; however, in reality, he wants them to succeed.
Surge has a very snarky personality, and it is said that he used his strong Electric-type Pokémon during some form of war within the Pokémon world. His nickname is the “Lightning American,” and that is somewhat surprising considering that Pokémon is not set within real-world regions. Lieutenant Surge is the most memorable gym leader in the Kanto region, and fans are glad every time they get to battle him again while replaying the generation 1 games and their remakes.
