Nintendo recently released the first part of DLC for Pokémon Sword & Shield, the Isle of Armor, adding various new content including additional story quests, a brand new area, new features, new Pokémon, and more.

Fans were excited that Game Freak was returning some of the older generation Pokémon that had previously been missing from the main game, as this had been a contentious issue for players. However, some players were disappointed to find that many fan-favorite Pokémon are still missing. While it’s understandable that the Johto legendaries might be kept for a special occasion, check out these ten other Johto Pokémon that should have been included in the Isle of Armor.

10 Sentret

Sentret is a Normal-type Pokémon that evolves into Furret starting at level 15. This adorable little Pokémon regrettably didn’t make the cut to return to the latest Pokémon titles.

Normal Pokémon are often overlooked, but they’re also often the most adorably designed Pokémon too. Sentret is definitely a cute little critter, as is its evolved form too, so it’s a shame that it hasn’t made an appearance in Sword & Shield yet. As Sentret’s usual habitat is temperate grasslands, it’s unlikely we’ll see it return in the next DLC, The Crown Tundra.

9 Yanma

Yanma is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon that originally didn’t have any other evolutions, but was later given the evolved form of Yanmega in generation four. Yanma evolves when it is leveled up while knowing Ancient Power.

As Yanma is based on a dragonfly, it would have been a great addition to the Isle of Armor DLC, serving as an especially ideal fit in the Soothing Wetlands area that is full of small bodies of water. It would have been nice for players to see this Pokémon flying around the area.

8 Smeargle

Though Smeargle doesn’t evolve, this Normal-type Pokémon still remains a fan-favorite, and players of Pokémon GO were super excited when it finally appeared in the mobile title. Given the positive reaction to its inclusion in GO, it’s strange that it was left out of the recent main Pokémon titles.

Smeargle is a very unique Pokémon in that it can use its “Sketch” ability to permanently learn the last move used by its opponent. Additionally, it can then pass these moves on via breeding. The only moves excluded from this are Struggle, Chatter, and any shadow moves.

7 Houndour

Houndour is a Dark/Fire-type Pokémon that evolves into Houndoom starting at level 24, which interestingly was also given a Mega-Evolved form in generation six. This punky looking dog Pokémon is a firm fan-favorite due to its very cool visual design.

Houndoom’s Mega-Evolution was a rather awesome design too, presenting a mixture of demon-dog and armored warrior vibes, leaving fans to wonder what a Gigantamax form of this hellhound could look like. Though Houndour was introduced during generation two, it was actually “native” to the Kanto region that the player could visit.

6 Snubbull

Snubbull was originally a Normal-type Pokémon when it debuted in generation two, but it was later reclassified as a Fairy-type when the typing was first introduced. It evolves into Granbull starting at level 23.

Despite not being the cutest Pokémon out there, Snubbull has still managed to gain its own fan-following in the Pokémon community. Additionally, it has often been chosen to appear in other Pokémon media, such as the anime and various movies, most recently appearing in Detective Pikachu.

5 Mareep

Mareep is an Electric-type Pokémon that has two further evolutions. Pokémon Sword & Shield introduced a new sheep Pokémon with the adorable Normal-type, Wooloo, and its evolution of Dubwool. While you might think that this new sheep Pokémon would steal the limelight from the previous sheep Pokémon Mareep, fans are actually desperate to see the two sheep together.

As a result, fans want Mareep to be added to the latest titles as soon as possible and were particularly disappointed when it didn’t return in the Isle of Armor.

4 Totodile

Totodile was the water starter Pokémon for the Johto games, and as such it has two further evolutions just like any other starter. Many fans were hoping more starter Pokémon would be added in for the Isle of Armor DLC, and several were– including Bulbasaur & Squirtle and the generation seven starters via the Diglett trainer. That said, the Johto starters are still missing in action.

Starter Pokémon are always well-loved by the Pokémon community and often hold a lot of nostalgia for players as they recall which starter they originally chose when the older games first released.

3 Chikorita

Chikorita was the grass starter Pokémon for the Johto region and it also appeared several times in the Pokémon anime, being shown with various trainers but most notably being one of Ash Ketchum’s own Pokémon. Starter Pokémon are always firm-favorites, in particular when it comes to shiny hunters, so many fans would love to see more starters added to Sword and Shield for this reason.

Interestingly, in early concept art, Chikorita’s body was yellow, but this was later changed to pale green. However, Chikorita’s shiny version pays homage to its original coloring and is yellow.

2 Cyndaquil

Cyndaquil is the last Johto starter Pokémon and is a Fire-Type. Considering that Pokémon Sword & Shield lost a few notable pure Fire-types because of regional variations– such as Ponyta & Rapidash both changing to Fairy-type and Darumaka & Darmanitan both becoming Ice-types– players are crying out for more Fire-types to be added.

With the next DLC, The Crown Tundra, set to take place in a snowy landscape, it seems unlikely more Fire-types will be added there. The original three Legendary bird Pokémon will return with the next DLC, but even the Fire/Flying-type Moltres has lost its Fire status with its new Galarian regional form.

1 Unown

The mysterious Pokémon Unown has always been one of the top fan-favorites of all time and so it seems such a shame that it hasn’t yet been introduced to Sword & Shield. Unown has 28 known forms, with 26 being based on the Latin alphabet, and the last two being based on an exclamation mark and a question mark.

Instead of having players hunting for Digletts all over the Isle of Armor, it would have been interesting to see Unowns included and players having to find them instead.
