Pokémon Sword and Shield didn’t have every Pokémon present in the games at launch; however, there are still a bunch of creatures that fans can capture throughout the game and the DLC. Some of these Pokémon look exactly how players would expect when they evolve; however, some of them are completely different in appearance when compared to their evolutions.
An example of a Pokémon that looks very different is Seedot Since its body structure changes to a large extent, and it’s general appearance morphs into a completely different creature. Some of these Pokémon even gain new types, and they evolve that make them more terrifying and powerful during Pokémon battles.
10 Surprise - Seedot
Seedot is an adorable Pokémon that is themed around an acorn; however, its final evolution Shiftry leaves much to be desired in terms of being beautiful or cute.
Seedot may be cute itself, but both of its evolutions are very different from itself, and Shiftry specifically is absolutely terrifying, especially when it is angry. Shiftry often has a menacing facial expression that scares travelers that are adventuring through forest in the Pokémon world.
9 Expected - Lotad
Lotad is the counterpart Pokémon for Seedot, and it is both a Grass-type and a Water-type giving it a diverse moveset and interesting stats. Lotad is a very unique Pokémon since it is themed around a lily pad and has two types that aren’t often seen together in the franchise.
Lotad has two evolutions; however, its final evolution Ludicolo, looks exactly as fans would expect it to appear. Ludicolo remains themed around a lily pad, and it isn’t shocking for fans at all when fans experience Lotad evolve into its evolutions.
8 Surprise - Chewtle
Chewtle is a turtle-themed creature, and it was introduced in Generation 8. Chewtle has a scary evolution in the form of Drednaw.
Although Chewtle may be cute itself, Drednaw is terrifying because of how angry it always appears and how strong it’s bite is. Most Pokémon trainers avoid Drednaw at all costs unless they want to catch one for their Pokémon team.
7 Expected - Rolycoly
Rolycoly is a Rock-type Pokémon that players can encounter in the Galar region, and it is most commonly found inside of caves. Rolycoly is small, especially when compared to its evolution, and this helps it stand out and gives it its adorable appearance.
Rolycoly is heavily themed around coal, and its final evolution, Coalossal, looks extremely similar to its pre-evolution in every way. Although Coalossal is much larger than Rolycoly, it shares many similar features, and it also retains its Rock-typing.
6 Surprise - Grookey
Grookey is the Grass-type starter Pokémon of Generation 8, and fans absolutely adore it because of its cute appearance and powerful attacks. Grookey has quickly become a fan favorite Grass-type starter in the franchise, and fans often show their admiration for this creature by using it in battle and drawing fanart of it.
However, Grookey’s final evolution, Rillaboom, is not nearly as adorable as Grookey, and it is even somewhat scary in appearance, which comes as a surprise to many Pokémon trainers because of how adorable its first form is.
5 Expected - Scorbunny
Scorbunny is the Fire-type starter in Galar, and it is one of the most popular Fire-type Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Players will have a chance to obtain this Pokémon at the beginning of the Generation 8 games.
Scorbunny is a typical rabbit-themed Pokémon, and its final evolution, Cinderace, looks like a much larger version of Scorbunny that is more powerful. As such, Scorbunny’s Evolution comes as no surprise for most fans.
4 Surprise - Blipbug
Blipbug is the regional Bug-type Pokémon of Galar, and what makes it stand out is its shiny eyes that look similar to a pair of glasses, which is absolutely adorable.
Most fans were surprised to see such a mean-looking creature such as Orbeetle come about after Blipbug evolved. A lot of fans were shocked to find out that Blipbug evolves into Orbeetle since they don’t look anything alike, and their general demeanor is very different.
3 Expected - Caterpie
Caterpie has been in the franchise since Generation 1, and fans have come to love this Pokémon because it is ever-present in the Pokémon franchise, and it was even caught by Ash in the anime.
Caterpie evolves into Butterfree as its final evolution, and that is no surprise since caterpillars turn into butterflies in the real world. Caterpie and Butterfree are an evolutionary line that fans will always understand from a biology standpoint since they make a lot of sense.
2 Surprise - Zigzagoon
Zigzagoon got a new regional form in Generation 8, and it even got a third evolution, years after it was originally created in Generation 3.
Zigzagoon’s final evolution Obstagoon doesn’t look anything like Zigzagoon, and although their color patterns match, their body structure does not. Obstagoon is a scary-looking Pokémon, and it seems that the developers were trying to design a creature that would be intimidating when compared to Zigzagoon or Linoone.
1 Expected - Axew
Axew has played a major part in the Pokémon franchise since Iris had one of these creatures as her companion in the anime, and Axew’s evolutionary line is one of the most powerful in the Unova region.
Most players aren’t surprised to find out that Axew evolves into Haxorus since they have a very similar body structure and color scheme. Although Axew does evolve into the terrifying Haxorus, both of these Pokémon look very similar to each other.
