Honest question: what the hell is Dunsparce? Like, it’s a Pokémon, fine, but what IS it? Pokémeon are generally recognizable as animals, either as birds, fish, giant lizards, dragons, or an overgrown cat. Dunsparce doesn’t look like much of anything, or at best a combination of a rattlesnake, grub, and a baby duck.
It looks like it’s the pre-evolutionary form of some greater Pokémon that just hasn’t been introduced to the game. However, Dunsparce was added way back in Gen II, and it seems that Game Freak has just plain forgotten about Dunsparce getting an evolutionary form.
Dunsparce is about as useful in Pokémon battles as it looks, but if really want to finish your Pokédex, here’s where you can find one.
Where To Find Dunsparce
If you don’t have the Isle of Armor expansion, you’re out of luck. Dunsparce doesn’t spawn in the base version of Sword & Shield, so the only way to get one without Isle of Armor is by transferring an older one from Pokémon HOME.
If you do have Isle of Armor, you can find Dunsparce in the Soothing Wetlands or at Challenge Beach. They can be found in all weather, and are relatively common too.
You can also find Dunsparce in Max Raid Battles at Fields of Honor, Soothing Wetlands, Stepping-Stone Sea, and Insular Sea.
How To Evolve Dunsparce
You can’t. Dunsparce doesn’t evolve, even though it really should.
What Dunsparce Can Do In Battle
Not a whole lot. Dunsparce has decent HP, but poor everything else, and an abysmally poor Speed stat. Dunsparce is unlikely to survive a strong hit and is equally unlikely to move before its opponent, so it’s just generally a poor battler.
Body Slam is likely to be your best Normal-type move since it has a chance to flinch your opponent. Rest/Snore/Sleep Talk is available if you want to run that combo, although Roost is an overall better healing ability that also defies Dunsparce’s complete lack of flight.
Look, you pick Dunsparce for its goofy looks, not because it has a hope of winning a fight. Make peace with that and you’ll find something to love in this weird worm-thing and maybe one day it’ll get an evolution in a new game.
