Hippopotas is a Gen V Ground-type Pokémon. Its concept hearkens back to the simple designs of Gen I in that it’s basically an animal with one elemental trait. In this case, it’s a hippo that spews sand. That might sound silly, but the evolution – Hippowdon – is actually a strong battler. Here’s where you can find one and add it to your team.
Where To Find Hippopotas In Sword & Shield
Hippopotas spawns on Route 6 in the tall grass. The easier way might be to go to the Wild Area’s Dusty Bowl and Giant’s Mirror. Hippopotas will be all over the place during intense sun or sandstorms.
It’s worth noting that Hippopotas comes in two color patterns based on if it’s male or female. So before you think you found a shiny, be sure to check for the sparkle animation.
How To Evolve Hippopotas Into Hippowdon
Hippopotas evolves into Hippowdon at level 34. Again, there’s a color difference between males and females.
What Hippowdon Does In Battle
Hippowdon’s secret weapon is its Ability Sand Stream. This causes a sandstorm to manifest instantly, which is a huge boon for Ground-types. Hippowdon is also fairly tanky, meaning it can lay down Stealth Rock and heal with Slack Off. When armed with defensive items, this can make Hippowdon an annoying juggernaut who wears opponents down with end-of-turn damage.
