With its Ditto-like expression, Wooper is undeniably one of the most adorable Pokémon to come out of the Johto region. Yet while Wooper and Quagsire may look simple, they have that second gen flair in spades. Best of all, they’re widely available in both Sword and Shield early on, and after learning about Quagsire’s battle capabilities, you’re definitely going to want to take one on your Galar adventure.
Where To Find Wooper In Sword & Shield
Remember the struggle of trying to catch a Goomy in previous games? If you’re seeking out a Wooper, you’ll somewhat run into that same issue of waiting for rain. Fortunately they have a much more forgiving appearance rate than that sticky dragon did. Found mainly in the West Lake Axewell section of the Wild Area, Wooper come out when it’s wet. Therefore your best bet is to seek one out when the weather conditions are either thunder, rainy, or a sandstorm (the last one because of the Ground-typing).
How To Evolve Wooper Into Quagsir, And Good Moves
Wooper becomes Quagsire at level twenty. No need to wait here, as it levels pretty fast even in a second form. Plus it hikes in power going from Wooper to Quagsire, so you’re really going to want to evolve it as fast as you can manage.
Since the only worthy moves it learns on its own are Muddy Water and Earthquake, you’ll have to step in with the TRs and TMs to sculpt it into a winning champion. Keep in mind TRs break after one use.
High Horsepower, a damage dealing move, is an absolute must in order to harness the Ground-type half of Quagsire’s strength. The TR can be purchased for 5,000 watts at the merchant in Giants Seat.
While Quagsire should know a Water-type move or two just for practicality, its strongest moves should be Ground-type since it has that natural advantage against Electric and Fire-types, both of whom are weak to ground. Teaching Bulldoze is also helpful because it lowers the target’s speed in addition to damage dealing. It can be found in the southeastern corner of Giants Seat. Lowering speed is crucial for big moves like High Horsepower to make a critical hit on an opponent. Reducing a target’s defense can also be necessary for triggering this. This is why if you’re going to give it a water type move, you should teach it Liquidation. Unfortunately Liquidation is only available as a TR in raid battle drops, but if you can’t get your hands on it, Surf is always a solid choice. You can buy it from a seller near the lake in the wild area.
The fact this Pokémon is resistant to Fire, Steel, Poison and Rock-types makes it extremely versatile in battle. If all else, bring it with you, armed with Ground-type moves, to the league match with Leon since his main unit is a dynamaxing charizard. Do keep in mind however that he can and will use Solarbeam, so you might want to have someone in your party to switch out with who can take the hit.
While it may not seem like much at first glance, Quagsire’s jack of all trades power is sure to lead you to victory on your challenge, and if done right, help you earn a spot as the Galar champion.
