Torkoal is a classic Pokémon from Generation II. Ash Ketchum had one on his Johto team, so it will also be one of those Pokémon lapsed fans should know. It remains largely unchanged in Sword & Shield, with no new evolutions, forms, or Gigantamax. It is still pretty good for a sun team, however, so you might want to catch one.
Where To Find Torkoal In Sword & Shield
Torkoal appears rarely in the tall grass of Route 6. However, you’ll have a better chance of finding it in the Wild Area during intense sun. If that’s the way you decide to do it, look in the Giant’s Cap, Giant’s Mirror, and Motostoke Riverbank areas.
What Torkoal Does In Battle
Torkoal can have the Ability Drought, which summons sun as soon as it hits the battlefield. Naturally, this makes Torkoal an important part of a sun-based team. It can also use Stealth Rock, a move that’s always good at the beginning of a battle. Smogon suggests a support moveset emphasizing these qualities as well as Torkoal’s ability to use Rapid Spin.
When it comes to damaging moves, Torkoal can use most Fire-type moves. It can also use Body Press, a fun new attack introduced in Sword & Shield that uses Defense instead of Attack to calculate damage.
