Few Pokémon have played a more important role throughout the history of the series than Meowth. It’s fitting, then, that this little cat Pokémon is present in Sword & Shield, where it comes with a brand new Galarian form and evolution, Perrserker.
If you’re looking to pick up your own Galarian Meowth (or its other regional forms), here’s a quick guide on where you can find your own and evolve it. There are also quite a few interesting things you might not know about Meowth. Here is how to catch Meowth, evolve it, and a few interesting facts you might not have known about the fan-favorite feline Pokémon.
10 Where to Find
Looking to pick up a Galarian Meowth for yourself and your team? You’ll need to head to Route 4 on the Galar mainland. Here, Meowth can be found in two ways. You’ll have about a 23 percent chance to find one roaming the overworld and a 35 percent chance to encounter one at random in the grass.
If you’re looking to grab an Alolan Meowth, you’ll receive one as a reward from the Diglett Master for returning five Diglett. For Kantonian Meowth, head to Turrfield. In the gym here, a young boy inside will trade you his for a Galarian Meowth.
Galarian Meowth will evolve into Perrserker at level 28, Alolan Meowth evolves when leveled up with high friendship, and Kantonian Meowth evolves into Persian at level 28 as well.
9 Secret to Dynamaxing
Interestingly, Meowth received a comical Gigantamax form that resembles a very long cat propped up on its hind legs. It seems at the moment that only Kantonian Meowth is capable of Gigantamaxing, and the Meowth that contain the G-Max gene can only be obtained through events.
The coin on Meowth’s head that it is known for, though, changes a bit when Gigantamaxed. It’s thought that the patterns on this coin contain all the secrets of Dynamax. Who knew Meowth could be so mysterious?
8 Quite the Bachelor
Meowth is, of course, one of the main characters of the long-running Pokémon anime, traveling and working with Jessie and James as part of Team Rocket. This Meowth is one of the most interesting characters in the series, and it seems, quite the bachelor as well.
Most people know Meowth’s back story with his ill-fated love, Meowzie. But, Meowth has also been shown to have feelings for some other pretty cats as well. He’s improvised moves to impress and protect a Glameow he loved, and he’s been shown to be coy around a Purrloin, among other crushes.
7 Persian and Perrserker’s Rivalry
Meowth is one of the few Pokémon to have two different evolutions based on its different regional forms — with Kantonian Meowth evolving into Persian and Galarian Meowth evolving into Perrserker.
But, it seems these two Pokémon have quite the rivalry. The two Pokémon are said to have a “mutual disdain” due to the differences in their personalities and temperaments. Since Perrserker seems aggressive and offensive and Persian seems demure and coy, it’s no surprise that they wouldn’t get along.
6 Fickle and Difficult
Speaking of personalities — it seems Meowth itself can be rather difficult as a companion. According to various Pokédex entries, Alolan Meowth is “impulsive, selfish, and fickle.”
It’s also said that it is very popular among trainers that are looking to shower it with attention. Kantonian Meowth is also known to fight with Murkrow over shiny objects or prey that they both find.
5 Still Wild
Returning to Team Rocket’s Meowth — did you know that it’s still technically a wild Pokémon? To the surprise of many, Meowth is not actually one of Jessie’s, James’, or any member of Team Rocket’s Pokémon.
Meowth considers himself an important part of the Team Rocket trio and stays with Jessie and James out of pure friendship and appreciation. Given his backstory, it’s incredibly touching that he feels like he belongs with this ragtag group of villains.
4 Move Diversity
It’s no secret that many Pokémon learn moves that don’t match their actual typing. This is fairly standard across all generations and games. But, one might not notice that Meowth has a bit of an aversion to this, learning only four different types of moves across all three of its forms.
Between Alolan, Kantonian, and Galarian Meowth, there are only four types of moves learned by level-up: Normal, Dark, Steel, and Fairy.
3 Gift to Alolan Royalty
When the first regional forms were revealed to the public — Alolan forms of Kanto Pokémon — they were explained to have physiological and biological differences because of the region in which they lived. Meowth was one of these Pokémon, having a different typing because of its different nature.
Did you know, though, that Meowth was originally brought to the Alola region as a gift to a now-defunct royal family? These Meowth were prized but eventually turned feral after the fall of the royal family, becoming widespread and common in the wild.
2 Maneki-Neko
Many Pokémon have real-world inspirations behind their designs, and Meowth is no different. This money-loving cat Pokémon is seemingly directly based on the Maneki-Neko or lucky cat.
Many are familiar with the Maneki-Neko as a golden statue with the waving paw often seen in restaurants and other businesses. They’re said to bring good fortune to the owners, and they’re often seen holding a koban or coin, which would explain the large gold coin on Meowth’s forehead. Its design inspiration also explains why it was often shown with its paw up in early artwork.
1 Forms
As mentioned several times already, Meowth has three regional forms, one for Kanto, one for Alola, and one for Galar. However, did you know that it’s the only Pokémon that can boast this? On top of that, it also has a Gigantamax form, making it the only Pokémon to have both a regional form and a Gigantamax form.
The only other Pokémon that can boast multiple form differences in this manner is Slowbro, which is the only Pokémon to have a Mega Evolution and a regional form.
