GX cards are a great addition to the Pokémon universe and it’s important to know which ones to use. To help with that, here are the ten best Sun & Moon GX cards.
10 Blastoise GX
Blastoise GX was not only a powerhouse in its own right but a perfect counter for one of the most dominating GX cards of the moment: Reshiram and Charizard GX. Being a Water-type, Blastoise GX was perfectly poised to bring down the powerful Fire-type Tag Team card.
What made Blastoise GX so incredible was the fact that its primary attack, Rocket Splash, shuffled Water Energy into your deck from any Pokémon on your field to increase its power. This synergized perfectly with another Blastoise of the time with the Powerful Squal Ability, which would attack Water Energy from the top six cards of the deck to any Pokémon on your field. In short, you could thin out your deck until it was just Water Energy to power up Rocket Splash with via Powerful Squal.
9 Lycanroc GX
The Midnight Form of Lycanroc GX was a powerful utility Pokémon. It was a Fighting-type with impressive attacks in Claw Slash and Dangerous Rogue GX, but that wasn’t usually the reason that this GX got slotted into decks.
The true perk of Lycanroc GX was its Bloodthirsty Eyes ability, which can swap your opponent’s active Pokémon with one from their bench without needing to use a Supporter card like Guzma. This found Lycanroc GX being slotted into all kinds of decks, even if there wasn’t a Fighting Energy to be found in them.
8 Pikachu And Zekrom GX
Pikachu and Zekrom GX was among the first wave of Tag Team GX Pokémon cards, and it made a shocking impact on the metagame. Tag Teams boasted more powerful attacks and higher HP with the only downside being an additional Prize Card lost when they’re knocked out.
This proved to be little concern with the likes of Pikachu and Zekrom GX. With Trainer cards like Electropower, Electromagnetic Radar, and the Thunder Mountain Stadium to back it up, Pikachu and Zekrom GX came out with a ton of support and little to stand in its way.
7 Buzzwole GX
Buzzwole GX was among the more frightening Ultra Beasts to come out of the Sun and Moon era of the TCG. Its attacks had a relatively low cost and dealt a ton of damage. However, Buzzwole GX was just the face of its deck; its true power came from its backup.
At the time that Buzzwole GX dominated, Regirock EX and Strong Energy were both still in rotation, both of which powered up Buzzwole GX’s attacks. On top of that, Diancie Prism Star powered up Buzzwole’s attacks by another 20 damage. Add to that the support of Lycanroc GX, and you have a deck that’s hard to beat.
6 Reshiram And Charizard GX
Reshiram and Charizard GX was obviously going to be a dominant card from the second it was revealed. With attack power that ranges from 230 damage to 300, 270 HP, and ample Trainer card support, there was little that was going to slow this creature down.
With the Welder and a Volcanion to cheat out Fire Energy, Fiery Flint and Fire Crystal to ensure you have Fire Energy in your hand at all times, Heatran GX as an alternate win condition, and Heat Factory for draw, there is little that isn’t available to the player in a Reshiram and Charizard GX build.
5 Ultra Necrozma GX
Ultra Necrozma GX was another Pokémon that was going to clearly dominate from its announcement. It’s Photon Geyser attack has no upper limit and is easy to power up, and Sky-Scorching Light GX can sweep your opponent’s field.
Like many GX, however, the true power came from Ultra Necrozma’s support. Malamar’s Psychic Recharge could charge Ultra Necrozma with Psychic Energy, Ultra Space searched your deck for Ultra Beasts, and Beast Ring could add more energy to your Pokémon, and Mysterious Treasure put Psychic Energy in your discard for Malamar to use while being another way to search your deck for needed Pokémon.
4 Arceus And Dialga And Palkia GX
Arceus and Dialga and Palkia GX is the granddaddy of all Tag Team Pokémon despite requiring two types of Energy cards to attack. Its basic attack, Ultimate Ray, deals a load of damage while charging your Pokémon with Energy. However, Altered Creation GX is the main selling point, as it powers up your Pokémon’s attacks while making it so you take one more Prize Card for each knockout.
Combine this with a powerhouse like the new Zacian V or Mega Lopunny and Jigglypuff GX, and you have an easy win on your hands, especially with how common Tag Team GX cards still are in the metagame.
3 Tapu Lele GX
Though Tapu Lele is long gone, it won’t be forgotten anytime soon. This GX was slotted in just about every deck build and for good reason. When you play Tapu Lele GX from your hand to your bench, its Wonder Tag ability allows you can search your deck for a Supporter card and put it in your hand.
Its Energy Drive attack required no specifically-typed Energy, and, though it wasn’t a particularly powerful attack, was more than capable of KO’ing a Pokémon here and there in a pinch.
2 Dedenne GX
Much like Tapu Lele GX, Dedenne GX is slotted in just about every deck it can be fit into as well. When played onto your bench, its Dedechange ability allows you to discard your hand and draw an entirely new hand of six cards.
That’s an incredibly powerful ability and is more than worth making Dedenne GX a soft target in decks with no Lightning Energy.
1 Zoroark GX
Finally, we have Zoroark GX. This Pokémon is a special case in that it can be slotted into any deck like Tapu Lele and Dedenne GX, but it can also just be the focal point of your deck.
Its Trade ability allows the player to discard a card and draw two. Its Riotous beating doles out 20 damage for each Pokémon the player has, which admittedly only maxes out at 120 damage. However, Riotous Beating requires no specific Energy types, so Zoroark can be slotted anywhere and be a potential threat. All sorts of decks were built around Zoroark GX or slotted this beast in for draw power. It was an insanely powerful card that dominated the metagame in its time. It suffered a weakness to Buzzwole GX, but even that barely slowed Zoroark GX down.
