Dire Wolf Digital has released a shiny update for Pokémon TCG Online, that includes a new form of digital currency. The in-game feature known as ‘Tournament Keys’ will act as tokens to allow entry to players who want to compete in some special tournament events.
In response to the backlash that PTCGO received over the way the Players Cup was handled, the digital version of the popular trading card game has now been updated with some positive new features. The 2.73 patch notes highlighted the importance of obtaining Tournament Keys, which would essentially act as entry tickets once the player has collected the required amount. The notes also specified a change to the amount of Tournament Rep points that are awarded to each player at the end of a tournament.
Accompanying general bug fixes and additional support for the Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield - Darkness Ablaze, the Tournament Keys were the main attraction of the update that sparked positivity amongst players. Redditors mentioned that the new currency was “a step in the right direction,” and applauded the addition of new features that PTCGO has been without for a few years.
As PTCGO was under maintenance yesterday, today will be the first time that players can really come to grips with the new features, and experience how they will work together. Other Redditors pointed out that the addition of Tournament Keys was likely Dire Wolf Digital’s response to the negative feedback it received about the Players Cup.
Youtuber and PTCGO competitor AzulGG summed up everything that was wrong with the Cup, while stating that he would not be participating. Commencing back in June, the Players Cup was heavily criticized for its unfair qualifying system. AzulGG explained how the amount of accrued tournament tickets, that are mandatory to enter the Cup, gave casual players an unfair advantage over regular players who had accumulated a lot more hours. The Youtuber also brought up the faulty leaderboard within the game’s ranking system that didn’t work for a lot of users, yet it was used to select qualifying players for the cup.
Many PTCGO players refused to be a part of the Cup to discourage Dire Wolf Digital from creating poorly assembled tournaments in the future, that were simply not up to par. The Players Cup will soon be in the past, and competitors are hopeful that the introduction of these new features will give loyal players a worthy experience similar to Limitless’ successful tournaments.
