Ice-type Pokémon are strange because they are able to brave the freezing cold areas of the Pokémon world that other creatures wouldn’t be able to live in. The conditions that Ice-type Pokémon are often found living in are questionable at best, and even the most frozen of these creatures shouldn’t realistically be able to live in such harsh environments.
However, there are some Ice-type Pokémon that are weird for other reasons, such as being completely frozen solid or having a peculiar theme that they are based around. Ice-type Pokémon are some of the weirdest creatures that players will encounter in the franchise, but because of their weird theming and biology, that is no surprise.
10 Delibird
Delibird is themed around Santa in that it can use its signature attack to give presents to enemies. These presents sometimes allow it to heal the enemy and sometimes deal damage instead.
This peculiar signature attack and its Santa-theme make for one weird combination that a lot of players are still baffled by today. Some fans question why this Pokémon was even created as it seems out of place in the Pokémon world, and it doesn’t have any evolutions.
9 Glalie
Glalie is a ball of ice that can float, and it is said to have an interior that is made out of stone. Its weird face scares most players, and it can often be off-putting to children that are playing the Pokémon games for the first time.
This Hoenn Pokémon also has a peculiar pre-evolution in Snorunt, and many players question how that cute creature became such a weird looking monster like Glalie.
8 Abomasnow
Abomasnow has a secondary Grass-type that allows for a large moveset that is more diverse than many other Ice-types that players will encounter in the Pokémon world. This creature seems to be themed off of the abominable snowman based on its name and general appearance.
The fact that Abomasnow is based on the abominable snowman is already a very weird occurrence in the franchise; however, its peculiar dual typing also calls into question why Game Freak would design a creature that is so weak to Fire-type attacks.
7 Vanilluxe
Vanilluxe is hands down one of the strangest Pokémon in the franchise because it is themed around an ice cream cone. Many players question how an ice cream cone that is sentient ever came to be and whether or not it was genetically engineered by humans.
Furthermore, Vanilluxe also has two heads that seem to work in unison, which is somewhat strange for a Pokémon themed around food. This creature is, without a doubt, one of the weirdest Ice-types in the franchise, and any player that sees it will understand why.
6 Bergmite
Bergmite is an iceberg creature that was created due to very cold temperatures. Many players do not understand how this Pokémon exists and how an iceberg could be alive & able to move around.
Bergmite is also extremely weak, and it seems that there should have been a second evolution in its evolutionary line before its final evolution. Overall, players that encounter this Pokémon usually understand why it is so strange both because of its theme and its lack of a middle evolution.
5 Arctozolt
Arctozolt is a new Pokémon that was added in generation 8, and its peculiar Electric/Ice-type calls into question its weird mix of abilities. This Pokémon is both able to shoot electricity out of its body and also form Ice-type attacks using the colder parts of its body.
Arctozolt also looks very strange due to the fact that it is a dragon that is frozen inside of a large block of ice. Arctozolt is a fossil Pokémon that players can obtain by finding both parts of it in the Wild Area.
4 Cloyster
Cloyster is themed around a pearl that is stuck in many different layers of protection. This creature is both a Water-type and an Ice-type, which allows for a mix that is present in many Water-types throughout the franchise.
Cloyster’s pearl with a face in the middle of its body is often questioned by fans that don’t understand its biology. It is also peculiar how this Pokémon is able to create such a large shell for its body after evolving from Shellder.
3 Alolan Ninetales
Alolan Ninetales is a Pokémon that was originally a Fire-type in every other Generation; however, it became an Ice-type in the Alola region. This Pokémon is extremely powerful regardless of which form the player catches, but they are also distinct because of their typing.
The fact that Ninetales was able to become an Ice-type from a Fire-type makes very little sense, and many players don’t understand how that was possible. A smaller evolution, such as Raichu gaining the Psychic-type in its Alolan form, makes a lot more sense because it doesn’t contradict its original type.
2 Eiscue
Eiscue is a penguin-themed Pokémon that has a large cube of ice on its head. This block of ice should freeze Eiscue frozen solid, but for some reason it does not.
Eiscue is a questionable creature, and its weird biology makes fans wonder how it is able to survive even the most freezing temperatures. It seems that Eiscue would die due to being frozen, but being a mammal makes it one of the strangest Ice-types in the franchise.
1 Frosmoth
Frosmoth is a Pokémon that resembles a moth, but it also has an Ice-typing. This means that this creature is able to fly while also having a frozen body. A lot of fans wonder how this is possible because if a creature were frozen, then it wouldn’t be able to fly through the air.
Frosmoth is also a questionable Pokémon because of its pre-evolution that is very different in appearance to its final form, even more so than most Ice-types are.
