Some of the most iconic Pokémon in the history of the franchise are Legendaries and Mythicals. These creatures are usually part of the story of the games they’re featured in, are very lore-heavy with interesting backgrounds, and they’re incredibly powerful. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the best legendary groups, and some of the worst. Before we get into it, let’s take a look at a few honorable mentions.

10 Good Honorary Mention: Deoxys

Deoxys doesn’t quite fit into any sort of Legendary or Mythical group, which is why it takes a spot as an honorary mention, but it’s a great Pokémon overall. Its DNA-inspired design is a ton of fun, and its ability to change formes at will is amazing. Every single one of those designs, by the way, is just as great as the original. And that shiny form? Get out of here. Incredible.

9 Bad Honorary Mention: Zygarde

One thing that will become clear as the list goes on is that some Pokémon are on the worst list because they just never got enough lore, they never got dug into enough. One of those Pokémon is Zygarde, a Pokémon that was all but ignored in its debut generation before being tossed a small sidequest in the next entry in the series. And then after that? Nothing. What a shame.

8 Best: Lunar Duo

The Lunar Duo, or generation four’s Cresselia and Darkrai, are a really interesting set of Pokémon.

Darkrai is all about preying on people’s weaknesses, putting them to sleep, inflicting nightmares upon them, and then feeding on those nightmares. Cresselia, on the other hand, does its best to cure those nightmares, and is the only Pokémon that has the ability to reverse the curse that Darkrai can inflict. A constant power struggle exists between the two that will likely never end.

7 Worst: Lake Guardians

The Lake Guardians are cool Pokémon that have some interesting background info, but they were very underutilized in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

For creatures that taught humans to feel emotions, knowledge, and willpower, they don’t get too much of a spotlight. They also have the power to control Dialga and Palkia when they work together. Why didn’t we see more of these Pokémon in their generation?

6 Best: Legendary Titans

The Legendary Titans is a Legendary group that is made up of Regice, Registeel, Regirock, and Regigigas (and a few more friends once The Crown Tundra is released). While every single one of them is pretty terrible when it comes to battle, the lore behind them is fantastic.

After pulling the continents apart, Regigigas was worshiped by people, but its power was too great, and it was sealed away. Before it was sealed, it created the other Titans, who were also sealed due to their power. The puzzles that players had to go through in order to obtain the creatures in generation three are iconic, and are still considered some of the best in the series

5 Best: Creation Trio

Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina make up the Creation Trio. The three were created by Arceus in order control time, space, and antimatter, respectively.

Arceus eventually banned Giratina to the Distortion World due to its violence, which sets up the plot of Pokémon Platinum. All three Pokémon have fantastic designs, with Giratina’s Origin Forme being the best with ease. Their involvement in the story of the generation four games is super interesting as well.

4 Worst: The Guardian Deities

The Guardian Deities, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Fini, and Tapu Bulu, watch over the islands of the Alola Region. While their designs and the lore surrounding them is very interesting, we never get to see that much of them in the games, with Tapu Koko being the only one that really gets any sort of depth. If they had been explored more in the generation seven games, they might have ended up on the good side of the list.

3 Best: The Ultra Beasts

The Ultra Beasts are a very interesting group that come from Ultra Space to the Alola Region through Ultra Wormholes, yet only do so very rarely throughout the years. They’re incredibly powerful, and they possess abilities that humans can’t even comprehend.

Their power is so notable that there have been tasks forces dedicated to destroying them, and the Aether Foundation began working on Type: Null in an attempt to create a Pokémon that could take them down. The Guardian Deities are also known to fight against them to protect their respective islands.

2 Worst: Gen 8 Trio

Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus have interesting designs (though some people would argue against that), but there just isn’t enough lore around them. There are some interesting things happening, but the basic story of Sword & Shield just doesn’t give its Legendaries enough punch. Beyond that, Eternatus is a total pushover, which is very disappointing.

1 Best: Type: Null And Silvally

Type: Null was a Pokémon that was originally created with a goal to take down the Ultra Beasts, but the project failed. Type: Null was unpredictable and couldn’t be controlled, and thus, the creature was abandoned. Only when Type: Null forms an unbreakable bond with its trainer will its true power be unleashed, evolving into Silvally. The journey that Type: Nulls must go through is great, earning the evolutionary line a spot on the list.
