The Pokémon franchise has been prominent since the late 1990s and it doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down anytime soon. When a franchise has various aspects fans can cling onto and become attached it will likely be around for the long haul.
It doesn’t hurt to have dragons either and tons of Pokémon fans love their Dragon-type creatures. Which ones are the cutest and ugliest of the bunch, though? Let’s now take a look at the 5 ugliest and 5 cutest Dragon-type Pokémon through Pokémon Sword & Shield.
10 Cute: Tyrunt
In the next entry, we’ll talk about a Pokémon who looks like a baby tyrannosaurus rex but manages to come across as hideous. Thankfully Tyrunt exists and showcases how something as deadly and dangerous as a baby t-rex can still have a design that feels relatively cute.
Now, Tyrunt still has the sharp edges and large claws of a fully grown t-rex, but its stubby arms, toddler proportions, and large eyes make it as cute as a t-rex can be. Let’s just skip over the fact that it often throws tantrums, according to the Pokédex.
9 Ugly: Bagon
Salamence is arguably one of the most popular Dragon-type Pokémon in the franchise, but before it becomes an intimidating powerhouse, it starts as an ugly little reptile. Bagon, the base form of Salamence, looks like something zapped all of the creativity out of Yoshi’s design from the Super Mario franchise.
You would assume that a baby dragon would be an easy thing to make cute, but Bagon’s stumpy arms and disgruntled face make it look like the type of baby parents dread of having to take care of.
8 Cute: Dreepy
Pokémon Sword & Shield, the latest games in the franchise, did a great job of introducing a host of new lovable Pokémon designs. Dreepy, a creative combination of Dragon and Ghost-typing, is one such new addition.
Its design is meant to mimic both a fighter jet as well as the common design elements of a ghost. Since its eyes are so large and welcoming it pulls off the oddly shaped head which happens to be paired with a spirit-like body. It’s so small as well as it is only a single foot tall and weighs less than 5 pounds.
7 Ugly: Druddigon
Very few Pokémon designs come across as something that looks like they’re from a different franchise entirely. Sure, some Pokémon are ugly, but their design still reads as it fits in the world of Pokémon.
Druddigon is the rare case in which a Pokémon looks like it is making a cameo from another show. Druddigon, not only is an odd assortment of colors, it looks like a Digimon some kid created in 3rd grade when they should have been studying for their math test. Most people don’t even know Druddigon exists, which isn’t surprising.
6 Cute: Goomy
If you’re old enough you should remember a film starring the late Robin Williams titled Flubber. In that film, Williams plays a scientist who creates a living gelatinous companion who is as adorable as it is chaotic. Goomy, the Soft Tissue Pokémon, is exactly that in the world of Pokémon.
This pink ball of goo may have tiny spotty eyes, but mixing those with chubby cheeks and large antennae make it a bundle of cuteness. Cuddling with something gooey may not be ideal, but with a face like Goomy’s how could you resist?
5 Ugly: Dragalge
Kelp and algae aren’t the most beautiful things you can come across when swimming in the ocean, so a Pokémon based on those things shouldn’t be either. Dragalge is a solid and often overlooked Poison and Dragon-type that can hold its own in a fight.
Its body is comprised of mostly brown extremities, with its core being a violet-pink hue. Dragalge doesn’t give off the most approachable vibes and most trainers should keep their distance just to be safe and avoid an unfortunate encounter with this hideous ocean-dweller.
4 Cute: Jangmo-o
Jangmo-o is a quadrupedal baby dragon who evolved to be covered in scales as opposed to sporting a pair of large wings on its back. Humans love tiny creatures, so the fact that Jangmo-o is less than 2 feet tall and weighs 60 lbs. means it falls into that range.
As it evolves it begins to look more intimidating and loses a lot of what makes it feel approachable. This is understandable considering it prides itself on fighting powerful foes and not on whether or not a human loves it and wants to take care of it.
3 Ugly: Drampa
Drampa in many ways looks like the dragon equivalent of the hippie uncle you have that your parents don’t like you spending time with. It takes life one day at a time and simply goes with the flow unless the flow involves any sort of personal grooming or hygiene.
Dragons throughout fantasy writing tend to come in one of two major categories, those being powerful and weird. Drampa falls into the latter in such a way you can easily forget that it happens to be Dragon-typed at all.
2 Cute: Dratini
When people think of baby dragons they automatically get an image of a tiny version of what a full-sized dragon looks like. Dratini is a creative approach to what a baby dragon can look like, with the base idea being they’re similar to frogs and grow from a tadpole.
Dratini may not have any limbs, but its large wondrous eyes, pastel blue coloring, and whimsical fantasy accents in ts design come together perfectly. It looks like it just wants to wrap itself around you and cuddle while the both of you day nap.
1 Ugly: Dracovish
In Pokémon Sword & Shield a new mechanic was introduced where trainers can use various fossils of older extinct creatures and mash them up and bring them back to life. This resulted in several hideous abominations that look like their mere existence is nothing but pain.
The ugliest of the bunch that happened to be Dragon-type is Dracovish. This thing is one part fish and the other dinosaur. Staring at it for too long will make you start questioning how this thing could ever survive in the wild.
