When players come across each gym leader, they are provided with a completely different experience. However this isn’t only because of the Pokémon type, but the fantastic personalities that come with each leader. Some of the Kanto gym leaders are presented with a little more depth as they are more prevalent in the anime, like Brock and Misty. However, some of the best personalities are hidden within the Pokémon games, such as Lt. Surge and Team Rocket’s own Giovanni.

Interestingly, the gym leaders’ personalities are not strongly dictated by the type of Pokémon they use, be it Ground-type, Poison, or Water. It is a mixture between their background, actions, and how they compete in the sometimes rather challenging gym battles.

8 Giovanni: Neutral Evil

As the head of Team Rocket, Giovanni is somewhat shrouded in mystery. However, he is not shrouded in enough mystery to hide the fact that this man is a bad guy who is intent on causing chaos and getting his own way by any means necessary.

As a typical neutral evil character, he tries to do whatever he can get away with, such as trying to take over the world. Giovanni is shown to have little to no compassion, aside from his odd soft spot for the Team Rocket Trio, even mentioning that Team Rocket’s goal was to control the world and the Pokémon inside of it. He is definitely neutral evil.

7 Blaine: Chaotic Neutral

Blaine is only chaotic because of his temper. He is described as “The Hot-Headed Quizmaster” within the games which just affirms his chaotic personality. In spite of this, his anime persona is quite different from how he looks in the games.

The reason he is placed in the neutral category is purely from the fact that aside from being quick to anger, he is intelligent and never does anything to really push him to evil or good.

6 LT. Surge: Lawful Neutral

For an Army veteran, it would be particularly difficult to put him in any other category aside from lawful. He is strict and cautious, abiding by his own code as well as the one given to him during his time in the military.

The only real reason he isn’t lawful good is because of his paranoia which causes him to set up traps in his own gym, allowing him to balance on the line of chaotic as well as proving that he is neither a good person nor evil.

5 Sabrina: Chaotic Neutral

As opposed to Blaine, Sabrina dances along the line of evil, playing the antagonist in the Pokémon series. Although it isn’t strictly the same in the games, she most definitely does not fall on the good alignment.

She has psychic powers herself and uses it wisely in battle which places her in the chaotic category as she uses her powers for fighting rather than saving people or using them for good. This is understandable but means she cannot be placed as good or evil.

4 Koga: Lawful Good

As a ninjutsu student, he must display great discipline and patience which eliminates him from possibly being chaotic. He is calm and due to his incredible discipline, it only makes sense to place him under a lawful good alignment.

However, due to him being the Poison-type gym leader, it begs the question as to if he is actually good. After all, poison is designed to hurt. Nevertheless, he rarely shows ill-intent and focuses on discipline and crushing the player in a gym battle.

3 Erica: Neutral Good

As someone who owns a wonderful garden, Erica must show care and patience in order for her beloved flowers and Pokémon to grow. She has the best garden in Celadon City which requires a good heart and definitely not a chaotic alignment like Sabrina or Blaine.

Erica is good for the sake of being good and represents pure beauty and kindness, therefore she cannot be anything but neutral good. She neither displays lawfulness or a chaotic personality.

2 Misty: Chaotic Good

She is quick to anger, like Blaine, but much kinder to her friends and everyone around her. Even giving her sisters the gym once she decided to join up with Ash and Brock to make the power trio that fans know and love.

Misty is a wonderful gym leader, beloved by fans and Pokémon trainers alike, even if some of her past is a mystery. Nevertheless, throughout both the series and the games she is undeniably chaotic and acts excitably most times, remaining kind to the people she meets, but she isn’t afraid to pack a punch with her Water-type Pokémon.

1 Brock: Lawful Good

In the series, Brock plays the father of the group, taking care of them and giving them wise and often useful advice on the way. In the games, he is pretty similar. He remains level-headed and caring.

He is hardly a chaotic person compared to someone like Misty and is undeniably a great person and an even better gym leader. This puts him as a fan-favorite for just being so wonderful in the show and so brilliant in the many many games he stars in.
