The beloved series Pokémon has captivated fans for more than two decades at this point and has captured a new audience with each new generation. Some are more beloved than others, but Pokémon fans have found new companions and favorites in each new region that’s unveiled as part of each new generation.

Among the Water-types in the franchise, though, which are the fastest in their respective regions? That’s a question that needs answering. Let’s now look at and rank the fastest Water-type Pokémon of every generation, through Pokémon Sword & Shield.

8 Barraskewda (Gen 8)

So, not only is Barraskewda the fastest Water-type Pokémon of the 8th generation, it’s the fastest regardless of generation. Yes, the Galar region newcomer not only made its way into the franchise, it immediately planted itself as a top tier Pokémon in an impressive category.

Barraskewda’s base speed stat is an incredible 136, which is not a number many non-legendaries have in any base stat. It’s known as the Skewer Pokémon, which should sound terrifying to anyone wading in the beaches off the coast of the Galar region.

7 Bruxish (Gen 7)

The Pokémon world at large already knows that Bruxish can win an award as the ugliest Water-type Pokémon, but people overlook its speed. Not only does it sport a base speed stat of 92, but it also happens to have a physical attack stat of 105.

Bruxish isn’t the cutest creature around but it can hold its own in battle. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, but if it gets an evolution in the future its speed could rise to a number even more impressive than what it’s currently born with.

6 Greninja (Gen 6)

For a good while, Greninja was the fastest Water-type Pokémon in the entire franchise. It made sense considering it was designed with the inspiration of ninjas and stealth films, so speed needed to be one of its defining characteristics.

Now, 122 speed as its base stat is still incredibly high and its owners shouldn’t feel ashamed that Barraskewda recently took its crown with the release of Pokémon Sword & Shield. It may no longer be the fastest Water-type, but it certainly can’t be matched in the Kalos region.

5 Simipour (Gen 5)

The fifth generation of games introduced over 150 new Pokémon for the first time since the original titles. Pokémon Black & White had fans quickly fall in love with the Unova region. Among the new creatures was a trio of elemental monkeys that mirrored the starter Pokémon types.

They came packed with good stats and secondary evolutionary forms and were positioned to help trainers overcome their starter’s weaknesses. Simipour, the Water-type of the trio, rounds out its solid base stats with a speed rating of 101.

4 Floatzel (Gen 4)

The fourth generation of games are rumored to be the focus of what fans are expecting to be new Pokémon game remakes in 2021.

The Sinnoh region is beloved by many, and one of its more unique creatures is the Sea Weasel Pokémon, more commonly referred to as Floatzel. This weasel loves the water and has evolved to have its flotation device that’s part of its biology. Since it’s adapted and thrived in the water it shouldn’t come as a shock that it’s base speed stat is a phenomenal 115.

3 Luvdisc (Gen 3)

Do you remember the Water-type Pokémon from the third generation called Luvdisc? If the answer is no, which it likely is, you shouldn’t feel ashamed. Despite being an adorable heart-shaped flat pink fish, no one built a bond with Luvdisc.

This was likely due to its lack of evolutionary forms and overall weak set of stats. One area where it isn’t forgettable though is its speed. This aerodynamic cutie as a base speed stat of 97 which is nothing to sneeze at considering the rest of its stats are below average at best.

2 Kingdra (Gen 2)

Kingdra’s base speed stat of 85 doesn’t sound too impressive, but you need to consider the full picture. The Dragon Pokémon is a 6-foot sea dragon that weighs over 330 pounds, so it coming in as the fastest Water-type in the Johto region should be eye-opening.

It can also have the ability Swift Swim which increases its speed in the rain if that happens to be its battle conditions. Kingdra may not be popular, but a look at its stats will show it’s more than capable with proficient stats across the board.

1 Starmie (Gen 1)

It should come as no surprise that the fastest Water-type in Kanto happens to be a creature who primarily resides in water. Some would assume the title would go to Squirtle or Wartortle, but speed was never the focus of their design.

Their final form is a powerhouse and no one expects Blastoise to win any races any time soon. Starmie happens to be the fastest Water-type native to Kanto and takes the crown with a base speed stat of 115, which also lands it as the third fastest regardless of generation.
