The second Pokémon Presents in as many weeks has come and gone and much to the dismay of Pokémon fans, it was nowhere near as action-packed as last week’s edition.
Last week Pokémon staged a direct it dubbed Pokémon Presents. Despite the fact the show was less than 30 minutes long, it was jam-packed with exciting news and announcements. The addition of Mega Evolution and Galarian Farfetch’d to Pokémon GO, a game that encourages kids to brush their teeth, and best of all, the big reveal that Pokémon Snap is finally getting a sequel.
The other tidbit of exciting news was that there would be a second edition of Pokémon Presents this week with even more big news. The Johto-based Pokemon in the background of the presentation had fans speculating that the announcement being saved was for Pokémon Let’s Go! Johto. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
There was just one announcement during the second Pokémon Presents. The reveal of a new title coming to mobile and Nintendo Switch called Pokémon Unite. Unite is the first-ever strategy-based Pokémon game, and although it isn’t Let’s Go! Johto, it looks like it will be a lot of fun. Teams of five will battle against one another in a MOBA that looks a lot like League of Legends, but with Pokémon.
The aim of Unite is to catch wild Pokémon on the map and return them to your team’s base. In turn, that will level up your Pokémon, making them more powerful, helping them to learn new moves, and even making them evolve. Players can restore their Pokémon’s HP by returning to the same base where they need to drop off wild Pokémon. The demonstration of Unite exhibited during Pokémon Presents can be watched in full above.
It might not be what Pokémon fans were expecting, but it’s still a pretty good-looking game that could be a lot of fun. It’s certainly very different from anything Pokémon has tried before, hence it employing the help of developers Tencent to work on the project. No release date was revealed for Unite during the direct, but it will be free-to-start and there will be cross-play for online multiplayer.
