As the rumor mill heats up for the next Pokemon title, fans have been discussing the inevitable Diamond and Pearl remakes. Gen IV is significant for many Pokemon fans. It has a number of amazing qualities that, even with the slowness, make fans hold Sinnoh in high regard. From a challenging campaign to an incredible post-game, Pokemon Platinum in particular is one of the best Pokemon games as a whole.
However, one unique aspect of the game is how it helped expand the personalities of NPC’s. Gym leaders in particular all have their own jobs and interact with the trainer out in the world. It was the first time NPC’s were such vibrant characters within the games themselves. And, of course, these personalities lend themselves well to personality traits of the twelve Zodiac signs.
12 Aries - Barry
Barry, the rival in Gen IV, is notable for his quick feet and unstoppable optimism. He waits for no one, including the player, and is always looking to get an edge on his rival. His explosive personality makes him a formidable trainer. He doesn’t even really hate to lose, he’s just there for the opportunity to improve. However, Barry’s impatience and impulsive nature often get him in over his head. The fiery Aries likely has a lot to love about Barry, as he himself is nearly a perfect Aries. The similarities are almost shocking.
11 Taurus - Maylene
Maylene, the gym leader of Veilstone City, is a martial artist and young trainer admired for her resolve and strength. Maylene is devoted to her training, staying motivated to become stronger even in hard times. Maylene is a trainer ready to get into the action herself at any time. She also loves to indulge in eating, as she is spotted participating in an eating contest in Celadon City. For the reliable and responsible Taurus, Maylene’s laser-focus likely resonates well.
10 Gemini - Candice
Candice, the gym leader of Snowpoint City, is one-part serious and studious trainer and one-part romantic and fun-loving. She herself believes she’s the opposite of the ice trainer stereotype, being warm and kind rather than emotionally closed off. In fact, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say she likely hates being alone. She’s particularly attached to Maylene, the two being good friends.
Candice is always looking to learn more so that she can teach people around her. Her multi-faceted nature likely allows her to resonate with the deeply complex Gemini. Her personality is certainly far from the rigidity of ice itself.
9 Cancer - Riley
There’s one word to describe Riley: empathetic. After all, the mysterious, aura-sensing man with his perfect partner in Lucario are deeply empathic. In his appearance on Iron Island, he shows great concern for the Pokemon around him, feeling their struggle within himself. He also shows great tenacity and understanding through training on the tough Iron Island. However, he’s also deeply mysterious and certainly hard to read. Even though he doesn’t have a Krabby, the Cancer sign certainly resonates with his aura.
8 Leo - Fantina
No personality in Gen IV is as explosive as Fantina, the ghost-type gym leader of Hearthome City. A foreigner from an unnamed region, Fantina is always ready to take center stage and dazzle people. Her expertise in contests in and battles shows how talented and creative she really is. However, it’s clear from how she speaks about herself that she is certainly self-centered. She knows how great she is, and she’s not afraid to talk about it. However, she is at least humble in defeat. Her outgoing nature and obvious starpower certainly exude the kind of energy a Leo lives with every day.
7 Virgo - Volkner
Volkner, the gym leader of Sunyshore, is shown on the surface to be a quiet and dejected person. He is incredibly hard-working and a electric-type battler, but sulks because he can’t find someone to match his strength. He’s absolutely critical of other trainers, likely because he’s critical of himself. He also loves renovation, caring about all the little details that go into creating the ultimate gym challenge. However, he’s hardly one for play, battling for the thrill of a challenge. He’s a total opposite of his partner, Flint, in that regard. The thoughtful Volkner would likely have a lot in common with the analytical Virgo.
6 Libra - Cyrus
Cyrus is the main antagonist of Diamond and Pearl. He has experienced much hardship in his life, and never really found people that resonated with him. As a result, he became dejected about the world and wanted to find a way to return it to a balanced, neutral state. This is the reason he goes about setting his plan in motion to create a new reality, one in which he can shape it to be perfectly balanced.
Cyrus is a diplomat and a strong leader, recruiting dozens of people to his cause of creating a new world. He, at least initially, does believe he’s doing a good thing. However, he was driven to madness by evil intentions. The balance that Cyrus seeks is one that Libra’s would certainly wish for, and perhaps he’s a warning to not chase that dream too far.
5 Scorpio - Cynthia
Cynthia, the fan-favorite champion of the Sinnoh League, is an intimidating person. She’s kind, resourceful, and passionate about Pokemon. Her personality makes her a natural leader and commander of Pokemon. She’s always looking to help the main trainer through their journey to the Pokemon League. Cynthia absolutely holds an unrivaled determination and resolve. Cynthia’s leadership skills, bravery, and honesty all make her the perfect representative of the Scorpio.
4 Sagittarius - Crasher Wake
Crasher Wake, the gym leader of Pastoria City, is the song-loving, pro-wrestling water-type expert. However, he hardly has a water-type personality. Crasher Wake is strong, physically, and emotionally, along with holding strong ideals about caring for Pokemon. He marches to the beat of his own song constantly. He has emotional outbursts as well, particularly when the Great Marsh is threatened by Team Galactic. It’s no surprise that he and Barry get along so well. Crasher Wake’s personality likely has the Sagittarius singing along with him.
3 Capricorn - Roark
Roark, the leader of Oreburgh City’s gym, is also the safety supervisor of the Oreburgh Mine. He helps with its operation and allows young trainers to get stronger in the mines. Roark is certainly smart and studious, similar to his father, but with his age comes a bit of an ego. He is often at odds with his father Byron, the two trading words and, occasionally, trading blows. He laments the fact he was defeated by a trainer with no badges, which is odd considering he’s the first gym leader. He trusts his own knowledge above all even when that knowledge isn’t good enough. Roark’s rock-solid, disciplined nature is one that Capricorn (if they exist) likely see in themselves.
2 Aquarius - Dawn/Lucas
While the player will select one of two gender options at the start of Diamond and Pearl, the other avatar becomes their own character as either Dawn or Lucas. Both are incredibly similar in personality, however, so they will be treated as the same character. They aren’t the smartest of characters, but their position as Rowan’s assistant is one they’ve definitely earned. They’re devoted to helping Pokemon and keeping them safe, which is shown in how willing they are to fight against Team Galactic. They’re a good friend, even if they’re ashamed of their own limitations as a trainer and researcher. Dawn and Lucas both very much have energy that resonates with an Aquarius mindset.
1 Pisces - Marley
Marley, a trainer found in Victory Road after the completion of the game, is a bit quiet and enigmatic. She has a gentle soul and really wants to learn more about the Pokemon Shaymin. However, she’s hardly talkative with the trainer. She’s very clearly happy to have the player along to help her but would likely have been fine alone. She does enjoy being the player’s friend, but only to a degree. She loves her Pokemon more than she loves people around her. This quiet goth is the perfect representative of the compassionate, but gentle, Pisces.
