The ever-growing Pokémon universe has hundreds of unique Pokémon, trainers, and villains. Whether a die-hard Ash fan or someone who just got into Pokémon, fans can find themselves in characters from every generation.

Generation V takes place in the Unova region over the course of Pokémon White and Black, and their sequels set two years later. Gym leaders run the gamut from prankster hippies to ornery CEOs. Let’s find out which Generation V Pokémon trainer fans’ birthdays place them with.

12 Aries: Alder

Alder, with his long tresses and rugged appearance, is the Unova region Champion in the original game. Plagued by the grief of losing his Pokémon partner, Alder tends to wander across Unova, but takes his role as Champion quite seriously. As such, he uses his experience and wisdom to help other trainers.

Like those born between March 21st and April 20th, Alder is not power-hungry, but he is passionate and outgoing. Aries would also likely work against forces they deem dangerous, like Alder does with Ghetsis.

11 Taurus: Drayden/Clay

Drayden and Clay are both ornery older men, but their overall appearances and demeanors are very different. Drayden is very reserved and can be a bit strict. Clay, on the other hand, is very focused on his business and tends to be hurried and a bit like a car salesman.

But they both stay focused on their own goals, just like people born between April 21st and May 20th. Though they can be stubborn, Taurus make stalwart allies and work tenaciously toward any goal they set their sights on.

10 Gemini: Burgh

Burgh is a “young artist” in Unova described as having an “eccentric and artsy personality.” Though into aesthetics, Burgh also likes to pull pranks on people from time to time. This playfulness and “do it for the Vine/Gram” mentality lines up well with those born under the Gemini Zodiac sign.

Born between May 21st and June 20th, Geminis can often be described as aloof and flighty. But they are also highly adaptable, outgoing, and capable. Always wanting to be where the party is, Geminis can also become gossipy or impulsive.

9 Cancer: Marlon

Cancer is a water sign, so it really works out that Marlon just so happens to be a Water Pokémon trainer. He also tends to be very laid-back just like most people born between June 21st and July 22nd.

Marlon is lively, tending to give impassioned advice to others, but can also be introspective just like most Cancers. Other Cancer traits include self-protection, possessiveness, a tendency toward goofiness, and introversion.

Cancers who are fans of the original Pokémon series will find themselves in good company as Misty can also be categorized as a Cancer.

8 Leo: Lenora

Lenora is the gym leader in Nacrene City of the Unova region and she trains Normal-type Pokémon. She is a tall, imposing woman but has a heart the size to match. With her assertive but kind nature, Lenora makes perfect sense to pair with those born between July 23rd and August 22nd.

Leos also tend to be competitive, charismatic, and ambitious. However, they can also become self-centered, overly dominant, and impatient if situations don’t go their way. Still, these passionate self-starters make for great friends.

7 Virgo: N/Elesa

Fans will recall that N was technically a “bad guy” at first, but the games and anime reveal that he had just been manipulated from a young age. On the other side of the spectrum, Elesa is very aesthetic-focused and can be calm and reserved or cheery with a fondness for awful puns.

They both exhibit a certain idealism (and consequently, pessimism) that Virgos can fall into and then have it used against them. Others born between August 23rd and September 22nd can be sensitive, perfectionists, single-minded, and observant. Small compliments can go a long way with repairing a relationship with a Virgo should the need arise.

6 Libra: Cilan/Chili/Cress

This choice might seem a little unorthodox, but Libras, born between September 23rd and October 22nd, tend to be quite mercurial in nature. Like Gemini, their moods can change on a dime. The trio of Cilan, Chili, and Cress fit with Libras because they can be seen as three parts of one whole.

The starter Pokémon the player character picks at the start of the game determines which person they fight later on. But each character has unique traits, all of which fall within the Libra umbrella. The trio can be impulsive, introverted, or outgoing depending on mood. They can also be sullen, friendly, clever, or indecisive. Like the scales that represent the sign, a Libra’s mood is determined by the events of their day.

5 Scorpio: Brycen

Scorpios (people born between October 23rd and November 22nd) have the tendency to be stand-offish, snarky, and elitist sometimes. But they can also be intelligent, clever, and steadfast allies when people earn their respect and trust.

Brycen is the Icirrus City gym leader specializing in Ice Pokémon. He’s very capable, disciplined, and has become more reserved after an accident schooled him for being reckless and arrogant. Like all Scorpios, Brycen takes the lessons he learns to their logical extremes. Other common traits include courage, determination, jealousy, secretiveness, aloofness, and honesty.

4 Sagittarius: Skyla/Iris

Sagittarius signs are known for being courageous, outspoken, idealistic, and adventurous. However, they can also become cynical, impatient, tactless, or overly inquisitive.

Both Skyla and Iris fit the archetype of those born between November 23rd and December 21st. They are both bubbly, enjoy training Pokémon and competing, and let their optimism lead the way. Under Drayden’s tutelage, Iris even goes on to become the Champion in the follow up to the original Black and White games. Her kindness and willingness to help others come straight out of the Sagittarius playbook.

3 Capricorn: Cheren

Looking a bit like a Persona character, Cheren serves as one of the childhood friends and rivals for the player character in Pokémon Black and White. He works hard toward his goal of becoming Champion, showing off a key trait of Capricorns: dedication.

Those born between December 22nd and January 19th can also display traits of practicality, ambition, realism, and attraction to material wealth or other perceived signs of success. Unfortunately, they can also become pessimistic, workaholics, irascible, and relentless in the way they approach tasks.

2 Aquarius: Roxie

Roxie is a rocker girl who likes to seem tough but hides a big heart with a great deal of compassion for specific people in her life. She trains Poison-type Pokémon and serves as a gym leader, too, despite her rockstar status.

Her puckish attitude pairs with other traits of those born between January 20th and February 19th including independence, originality, assertiveness, and nonconformism. However, Aquarians can also become detached loners who tend toward extremism, impulsivity, and obstinance. Lucky for Pokémon fans, Roxie is one of the good people. She could just as easily have been a villain instead.

1 Pisces: Bianca

Bianca is almost the opposite of Roxie when it comes to personality. Another of the player character’s childhood friends and rivals, Bianca is bubbly and protective but is willing to “break the rules” if she thinks the goal is worthwhile.

Other Pisces, born between February 20th and March 20th, are empathetic, sensitive, imaginative, and pleasure-seeking. But they can often be naive, fearful, escapist, and prone to negative habit formation. But overall, Pisces are compassionate friends that will always do whatever they can to help their allies out of a bind.
