As some of the main bosses in the Pokémon franchise, the regional gym leaders are some of the most recognizable characters in-game and, in more recent years, have taken on more responsibilities outside of their gym to become central to the overarching plot. While the Johto gym leaders weren’t quite as engaging as more recent ones, they often have enough personality to make them memorable in their own right.

Your Zodiac is often seen as an indicator of your personality traits. In particular with the Chinese Zodiac, the year you are born and the stars you are born under are seen as an indicator of what kind of person you will become, as well as what people can expect of your behavior. The gym leaders, along with their associated traits, may match up with your respective zodiac in terms of personality.

8 Falkner: Tiger/Dog

Those born in the year of the tiger are often seen as brave, confident, and competitive, while those born in the year of the dog are seen as loyal, oftentimes to a fault, with a strong sense of duty.

Although Falkner is one of the gym leaders players interact with the least, the one conversation players have with him is enough to easily see why he could be born in either one of these years. He has a fierce loyalty to his father and his beloved Flying-type Pokémon, and has a strong sense to prove himself in battle and prove his Pokémon’s worth to the player.

7 Bugsy: Dragon

The year of the dragon is associated with those who are confident, intelligent, and enthusiastic in all aspects of life. He may be linked to one of the weaker types in the series, but Bugsy has more dragon in him than bug.

Although Bugsy doesn’t give much away in the short conversation players have with him, he boasts that he is the best Bug-type specialist there is, and is even confident enough to lead with his strongest Pokémon, Scyther, in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, as well as employ one of the better battle strategies, particularly for an early gym leader.

6 Whitney: Snake/Rat

Snakes are often seen as evil creatures in western culture, particularly due to the serpent in the garden of Eden, but in the Chinese Zodiac they are seen in an entirely different light as enigmatic, intelligent, and wise.

The same can be said for rats, who are seen as plague bringers in large part due to their association with the black plague, but in Chinese zodiac are, quick-witted, resourceful, and versatile. This misunderstanding, as well as the personality traits that come with both the snake and the rat, fit Whitney perfectly, as her Normal-type specialty fits the versatile nature of their type, as well as her enigmatic personality and actions as a gym leader.

5 Morty: Monkey

Monkeys are often seen as curious creatures and those born in the year of the monkey are no exception, with them being seen as curious, sharp, and smart. When players first encounter Morty, he is investigating the Burned Tower for evidence of the Legendary Beasts, as well as the legend associated with them that a powerful trainer will one day tame them.

He is also a highly capable and intelligent battler, with his Ghost-type Pokémon all being able to deal with many different types and strategies.

4 Chuck: Horse/Rooster

The year of the horse is associated with those who are animated, active, and energetic, while the year of the rooster is reserved for those who will be observant, hardworking, and courageous. For a martial arts master like Chuck, there’s no better way to describe his personality.

He is described to be always training and working hard, with his gym in HeartGold and SoulSilver even being centered around the player having to get his attention by shutting off his training device, as he is so focused on his meditation that he doesn’t even register their existence.

3 Jasmine: Rabbit/Pig

Jasmine is a strange character among the gym leaders. Although she presents herself as a quiet and reserved person, she proves to be one of the toughest gym battles in the game before the final battle with Clair.

Her love of the lighthouse Ampahros and her determination to make sure it gets healthy again, alongside her quiet nature, makes her a surefire contender for either the year of the rabbit or year of the pig. Rabbits are generally quiet, kind, and responsible, while pigs are compassionate,  generous, and diligent, and all of these traits fit Jasmine perfectly.

2 Pryce: Goat

Not much is revealed about Pryce in the games, but he is mentioned to be a powerful trainer in spite of, or maybe even because of, his age. When he is engaged in battle, he is calm and collected, but his story doesn’t end there. In the anime, he is first introduced as simply a trainer looking for his long lost Piloswine, who was separated from him in a snowstorm as a young man.

His gentle, sympathetic nature, alongside his calm demeanor, makes him a clear goat among other Chinese zodiac.

1 Clair: Ox

Although Clair is often only seen in the worst light, as a sore loser who doesn’t accept defeat at the hands of the player and who is constantly living in the shadow of Lance, there is more to her than her failings.

A diligent trainer who has worked hard, determined to elevate herself from the shadow of others associates her clearly with the year of the ox. Ox’s are also seen as strong people, both in will and physical power, both of which fits Clair as a person and a trainer.
