The most defining characteristic of any species in a Pokémon game is its type. This elemental or mystical trait is what each Pokémon’s appearance and powers come from, and are just as important to their identity as their name.
There are eighteen Pokémon types, and while they help describe different Pokémon well they can just as easily describe the trainers themselves, just the way an astrological sign can. These are the Pokémon types that best fit each Zodiac.
12 Aries (March 21 - April 19): Normal
While Normal-type Pokémon are often considered plain animals due to their lack of Super Effective moves, this breed of Pokémon is far from boring or weak. Moves like Hyper Beam and Giga Impact are some of the strongest in the games, at the cost of a lost turn afterward.
This combination of huge power and significant drawback is what makes it an accurate way to describe an Aries. With their enthusiasm and ambition, they can easily fall flat and embarrass themselves by being too eager or excited. But much like an intense attack, their risk is often worth the benefit.
11 Taurus (April 20 - May 20): Rock
Rock-type Pokémon can be extremely similar in terms of stats. They often have a high physical defense and can pack a pretty huge punch, but have a lot of weaknesses and can be exceptionally slow. They might be strong, but they’re far from perfect fighters.
The same can be said of a Taurus, who’ll push forward in spite of any conflicting opinions or obstacles. They’re often confident about just how right they are and how successful they’ll be, and just like Rock-type Pokémon, they’ll persevere as hard as they can despite the huge list of things that’ll get in their way.
10 Gemini (May 21 - June 20): Ghost
Opposite to Rock-types, Ghost-type Pokémon have an extremely diverse list of stats and styles. Some like Gengar and Rotom has tons of speed and trickster personalities, while others like Dusknoir and Drifblim are beefy intimidating threats.
If there’s anyone that can relate to this variance, it’s a Gemini. These extroverted butterflies can bounce from being the life of the party to an arrogant bully in no time at all. They’re fun and adorable in their own way, but just like Ghost Pokémon, they’re still something that can easily turn scary if their backs are against the wall.
9 Cancer (June 21 - July 22): Fire
Fire-type Pokémon have a lot of variance, but much like Normal-types, they have a lot of common strengths. This comes in the form of literal firepower, and from engulfing infernos to beautiful flares, they have tons of ways to ignite their opponents.
Cancers can light up the room just the same, taking advantage of their sudden bursts of energy and knowing exactly how to spark a conversation out of nowhere. While they might be intimidating when they get angry, they’re always capable of turning that aggression into something positive.
8 Leo (July 23 - August 22): Fairy
Since their introduction in Pokémon X & Y, the Fairy-type has become one of the most distinctive Pokémon types. With a common pink color palette and an emphasis on adorableness and showmanship, they’re excitable and optimistic and aren’t afraid to show those traits to everyone they encounter.
The same goes for Leos, who love to be the center of attention and are always proud of themselves. They could stand to have a little more self-awareness since their hubris can often be their biggest fault, but just like Fairy-type Pokémon, their pride is just as big as their drive to succeed.
7 Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Psychic
Psychic-type Pokémon might be known for their extreme power in the original Pokémon Red & Blue, but their mystical nature is what truly defines them. Their control over mental and emotional forces is unmatched, and their abilities to alter the environment is what makes them just as powerful in Pokémon Sword & Shield.
Virgos wish they could have that much control, and are undoubtedly Psychic-type through their desire to have a clear mind when life gets chaotic. Even just with telekinetic powers, a Virgo would be able to clean their room instantly and keep their living space as tidy and comfortable as they wish.
6 Libra (September 23 - October 22): Ground
There are tons of different animals and elements that Ground-type Pokémon are represented by, but they all relate back to the dirt beneath their feet. Creatures like Hippowdon and Diglett are so close to nature that they literally bury themselves in their simplest forms.
While Virgos wish to have a clear mind, Libras prefer to have an organized mind. Every decision has to be perfect, and any wrong decisions or worthless actions are sure to keep them up at night. Being tuned with the earth and being able to gauge the ground they stand on is what makes them a perfect Ground-type.
5 Scorpio (October 23 - November 21): Dark
Dark-type Pokémon are not exclusively malicious or evil, but they do tend to be more mysterious and secretive than other types. Many of them attack fast and hard with moves like Sucker Punch, and they can have a nasty tendency to steal items.
Scorpios are fairly similar, having their own degree of sneakiness that can catch others off guard. They can be much more empathetic than they seem and are certainly not just thieves and backstabbers, but if they put their mind to it they can be extremely elusive and live a surprisingly busy life without anyone knowing.
4 Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21): Bug
While there are some exceptions like Shuckle and Forretress, Bug-type Pokémon are most iconic for their speed as they scutter through the grass or buzz through the air. Pokémon like Ninjask and Accelgor are some of the fastest in the game, and with moves like Baton Pass, they can dodge any scary situation quickly.
This is something that a Sagittarius wishes they could do, as they have an unfortunate tendency to jump ship any time a situation gets hairy. They aren’t typically bold enough to abandon friends or not try to make improvements, but if things grow beyond repair they’re undoubtedly ready to fly away as fast as a fluttering Ribombee.
3 Capricorn (December 22 - January 19): Steel
Steel-types are all about fortitude, mostly consisting of massive and sturdy statues like Metagross and Bronzong. With Steel-type moves like Gyro Ball that grow stronger based on how slow the user is, it’s clear that this Pokémon category is a hard force to take down.
Capricorns can stand just as tall and still, refusing to move and caring more about consistency than what might be smart. That lack of flexibility can make them stubborn like a Taurus, but it also helps them remain cool under pressure and their solidity makes them as hard to knock down as a Steel-type titan like Melmetal.
2 Aquarius (January 20 - February 18): Dragon
Dragon-types have taken a lot of forms over the years. This classification originally belonged to some stereotypical serpents and beasts in Pokemon Red & Blue, but Dragon-Types nowadays can be anything from skyscrapers like Duraludon to drakes like Noivern.
What’s always been common among Dragon-types, though, is their power, and the Aquarius sign is no different. These loners take pride in their uniqueness, and while their drive to be independent can sometimes make them outcasts, they are often some of the smartest, strongest, and most capable people you’ll meet.
1 Pisces (February 19 - March 20): Water
Water-type Pokémon can also take a huge variety of forms, appearing as every form of aquatic creature imaginable. From amphibious frogs like Seismitoad to sea creatures like Jellicent, Water-types are some of the most diverse species in the entire world of Pokémon.
Pisces come in just as many shades, feeling a wider set of emotions than any other sign and taking any emotion thrown at them to heart. This might make them sensitive to criticism, but after some time, these sorts of comments are a small drop in the oceans that their typing loves.
