Mudkip, Vaporeon, Starmie, Psyduck… there are so many water Pokémon to choose from! But some correspond better to certain archetypes than others, especially when it comes to pairing with things like Zodiac signs. Everyone has astrological signs such as Aries and Pisces based on their birthdays. But there are corresponding Chinese Zodiac signs, as well, that are based on a person’s birth year.

Each animal carries its own attributes, traits, and elemental associations. If you happen to feel a particular affinity with a certain Water-type Pokémon, just keep scrolling to see if they happen to match your sign!

12 RAT/GRENINJA

Those born in the years of the Rat have a fixed water element, are in the first trine, and are associated with the Yang force. These people can be wise, intense, and determined, but also nervous, ruthless, or plotting.

Greninja is perhaps best known for being one of Ash’s Pokémon, and evolves from Froakie. With stealth moves like Water Shuriken and utility moves like Cut, Greninja offers agility, cunning, and usefulness in one convenient tongue-as-scarf wearing package.

11 OX/LAPRAS

Those born in the years of the Ox have a fixed earth element, are in the second trine, and are associated with the Yin force. Oxen can be honest, thoughtful, and loyal, but also stubborn, judgemental, and petty.

Another of Ash’s Pokémon, Lapras stands out as a creature who can be aloof at first, but extremely outgoing and playful after warming up. The Ox and Lapras share their earnest, but inflexible natures. The animal of the ox can also carry things on its back just like Lapras.

10 TIGER/POLIWRATH

Those born in the years of the Tiger have a fixed wood element, are in the third trine, and are associated with the Yang force. These people can be adventurous, outspoken, and jovial, but also tend toward arrogance, anxiousness, and aggression.

Far from its Poliwag roots, Poliwrath is a fearsome Pokémon just like the tiger is a fearsome animal. With big personalities and a tendency toward acting first and thinking later, Poliwraths/Tigers can be big teddy bears or wall-smashing Kool-Aid Men.

9 RABBIT/AZUMARILL

Those born in the years of the Rabbit have a fixed wood element, are in the fourth trine, and are associated with the Yin force. Rabbits can be faithful, clever, and compassionate, but also insecure, finicky, and pessimistic.

Azumarill is a water/fairy type Pokémon. That relates to a Rabbit’s flighty nature, but also to its compassionate personality. Pokémon lore states that an Azumarill will save a drowning Pokémon if it happens upon one and has highly developed hearing.

8 DRAGON/GYARADOS

Those born in the years of the Dragon have a fixed earth element, are in the first trine, and are associated with the Yang force. These people can be intelligent, courageous, and charismatic. However, they can also be brash, impetuous, and lack flexibility.

This comparison might seem obvious, but it also makes sense. Like dragons of lore, many viewed Gyarados as an angry Pokémon due to its docile nature as Magikarp. But, like Dragons, Gyarados will jump into action if it senses danger.

7 SNAKE/EMPOLEON

Those born in the years of the Snake have a fixed fire element, are in the second trine, and are associated with the Yin force. Snakes can be intuitive, sympathetic, and wise, but they can also be hedonistic, duplicitous, and vain.

Headstrong, a bit competitive, and social, Empoleon perfectly encapsulates the personalities of those born under the year of the Snake. Like Snakes, Empoleons form close bonds with trainers and Pokémon alike. Empoleon evolves from tiny Piplup showcasing a Snake’s sympathetic side.

6 HORSE/FERALIGATR

Those born in the years of the Horse have a fixed fire element, are in the third trine, and are associated with the Yang force. These people can be witty, outspoken, and easygoing, as well as impulsive, self-centered, and impatient.

Prone to fits of impulsivity in battle when agitated, Feraligatr exemplifies the good and bad virtues of those born in the year of the Horse. It evolves from adorable Totodile and has the same up-for-anything attitude that many Horses have.

5 GOAT/PRIMARINA

Those born in the years of the Goat have a fixed earth element, are in the fourth trine, and are associated with the Yin force. Goats can be charming, intelligent, and compassionate, but lack organization, decisiveness, and wisdom.

Primarina, another water/fairy type Pokémon, can be playful and social, but also a bit aloof and detached. Lana’s Primarina from Pokémon Sun & Moon is very close to her trainer showing how compassionate Goats can be. The Goat’s association with Yin also relates to both the ocean and the moon.

4 MONKEY/BLASTOISE

Those born in the years of the Monkey have a fixed metal element, are in the first trine, and are associated with the Yang force. These people can be humorous, charming, and confident, but are prone to arrogance, dishonesty, and opportunistic behavior.

Evolving from the always cool Squirtle, Blastoise is most like those born in the year of the Monkey. With loyalty betrayed by ego and the predilection to take jokes a little too far, Blastoise shows that Monkeys contain multitudes.

3 ROOSTER/KINGLER

Those born in the years of the Rooster have a fixed metal element, are in the second trine, and are associated with the Yin force. Roosters can be capable, self-reliant, and charming. However, they can also be insensitive, controlling, and a bit reckless.

Ash also had a Kingler at one point and it corresponds to those born in the year of the Rooster. With quiet determination and humility, Kingler exemplifies the best parts of a Rooster. However, Krabbys, which Kingler evolves from, show how brash Roosters can be.

2 DOG/FLOATZEL

Those born in the years of the Dog have a fixed earth element, are in the third trine, and are associated with the Yang force. These people can be protective, likable, and sincere, as well as paranoid, stubborn, and cynical.

Kind of like a sea weasel, Floatzel most relates to Dogs. It is playful, loyal, and agile. But it can get a little unfocused at times, as well as unwilling to stray from their chosen plan of action. Similarly to real-life dogs, Floatzels also save drowning people using its flotation sac.

1 PIG/SLOWBRO

Those born in the years of the Pig have a fixed water element, are in the fourth trine, and are associated with the Yin force. People born in the year of the Pig can be thoughtful, curious, and creative while also being hot-tempered, insecure, and gullible at times.

Happy-go-lucky at first, Pigs and Slowbros share the trait of intense tempers. One could say that the two parts of a Pig are the Slowpoke and Cloister that create Slowbro. The two Pokémon share a special relationship which relates to a Pig’s thoughtful nature.
