Pokemon come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and fall into a variety of types that dictate the moves they can learn. It also determines what they’re strong against in battle and what types of Pokemon they should avoid at all costs. Rock-type Pokemon aren’t the most popular or exciting, but they share a connection to the Earth.

Many of them are quite heavy, but thanks to creative design they can appear much lighter than they actually are. From Pokemon Red & Blue to Pokemon Sword & Shield, there have been dozens of incredible Rock-type Pokemon.

10 Stonjourner (1146 lbs.)

A passing glance at the Galarian Rock-type Pokemon known as Stonjourner will have observers assuming that the creature is quite heavy. No one assumes the Big Rock Pokemon is going to weigh anything short of a number described as “heavy”. The actual number will surprise people nonetheless, though, because it seems ridiculous for a Pokemon to weigh that much. Stonjourner on average is around 1,150 lbs. in weight. That’s more than twice that of Onix from the Kanto region, a giant snake make of boulders.

9 Magcargo (121 lbs.)

Magma and lava are liquid so there’s no way that a creature that happens to be a magma slug is heavy, right? Well, first off magma and lava are the same thing, as scientists refer to the former when discussing molten rock underground and the latter for molten rock above the surface.

Think of it as something closer to sludge than to water or some thinner type of liquid. The Lava Pokemon from the Johto region weighs about 140 lbs. on average, with a good amount of that weight residing in the shell on its back that it calls home.

8 Crustle (440 lbs.)

If scientists heard that there was a creature with a segment of Earth with several layers of crust as its body they’d know that thing was likely pretty heavy. Those viewing Crustle tend to see its body as compacted or wet dirt and sand, which’s not too dissimilar to sandcastles and the like. It weighs 440 lbs., so that should make it clear that the Stone Home Pokemon is anything but light. That weight also displays just how incredibly strong these crab-like creatures are and how astounding a feat it is for them to move around.

7 Shuckle (45 lbs.)

Turtles are an interesting real-life case study of how humans can perceive things a certain way based on assumptions. When people first learn of turtles their first thought is that the inside of the shell is hollow, but upon picking up the creature it becomes clear that the shell is fully loaded. Shuckle, the Mold Pokemon, looks like a thin worm-like creature living in a hollow shell, but by picking up the Bug and Rock-type creature unsuspecting trainers would understand that it isn’t a hollow shell and that’s why Shuckle average around 45 lbs. when it comes to their weight.

6 Golem (661 lbs.)

Golem is a rather thick-looking Rock and Ground-type Pokemon that’s compact and low to the ground. It stands at just above 4 feet tall and has four arms extruding from its spherical body. It can have the Pokemon ability called Sturdy, which makes sense based on how condensed its body appears to be. It’s simply known as the Megaton Pokemon, so there’s no surprise that it weighs around 611 lbs. It’s a dense collection of Earth, so picking it up is a feat reserved for the strong.

5 Rolycoly (26 lbs.)

Rolycoly may stand at around a foot tall, but don’t overlook the 26 lbs. of weight it averages. That may not seem like a lot for the Rock-type Pokemon known as the Coal Pokemon, but it can be shocking to people. It’s a collection of coal that happened to gain sentience, and coal is never thought of as heavy. Condensing it into a singular entity though can rally showcase how deceptive assumptions can be in regards to sediment and other materials derived from the Earth. Rolycoly just gets heavier from there and will end up weighing near 700 lbs. in its final form, Coalossal.

4 Minior (88 lbs.)

Minior is a Rock and Flying-type Pokemon hailing from the Alolan Islands featured in the 7th generation of games. It is fascinating for several reasons, including its fluctuation in weight depending on which form it is. Its meteor form is about a foot tall and weighs in at 88 lbs.

The core form stands at the same height, but since it’s mostly energy its weight is reduced to less than a single pound. The former is statistically a defensive stalwart, while the latter uses its lack of weight to outspeed its opponents.

3 Onix (463 lbs.)

The design of the Rock and Ground-type Pokemon Onix is rather clever considering it takes the silhouette of a snake and merges that with the physical materials of rocks. Since it happens to be lengthy and thinning from its head to its tail, Onix gives off the perception that it is fluid and light. It’s actually comprised of boulders that lessen in size down the length of its body, resulting in the Rock Snake Pokemon weighing in at around 463 lbs. Quite a weight for a Pokemon coming in at an overall size of around 28 feet from head to tail.

2 Lunatone/Solrock (330 lbs.)

The Rock and Psychic-type pair known as Lunatone and Solrock from the 3rd generation of games have always felt connected. This is why it makes sense that they’re paired together on this list. On average they both measure between 3 and 4 feet tall and weigh a staggering 340 to 370 lbs. on average. This is wild considering they aren’t that large, but since both are known as Meteorite Pokemon it makes sense that the sediment material making their body is heavier than what anyone would assume.

1 Pupitar (335 lbs.)

How much can a cocoon weigh? Well, when thinking of caterpillars and butterflies the logical conclusion is that it is rather light. Pupitar, the Hard Shell Pokemon, is a Ground and Rock-type creature that is neither a caterpillar nor an emerging butterfly. This thing is the middle form of a Godzilla-inspired kaiju Pokemon. Creating that type of beast requires storing a lot of energy and nutrients, resulting in Pupitar weighing about 335 lbs. on average. That’s more than double the weight of its base form Larvitar and around 100 lbs. shy of its final form Tyranitar’s weight.
