For the Meltan Special Research quest, Pokemon GO players are tasked with hunting down Aerodactyl and other fossil Pokemon for its completion. Many have since completed and moved on from this quest, but some may still be stuck. It doesn’t help completionists either that these are some of the hardest Pokemon to find in the game, but there are still a few tricks to getting hands on these ancient Pokemon.

Early on, Fossil Pokemon consisted of Aerodactyl, Omanyte, Kabuto, Anorith, and Lileep (and their evolutions) at the time of the Meltan Special Research, but since then, the gen 4 fossil Pokemon Cranidos and Shieldon have been added. Whatever reason players are hunting for fossils, this Pokemon GO guide will walk through obtaining all of the aforementioned Pokemon.

May Field Research Tasks and Rewards

Perhaps the easiest method of guaranteeing Aerodactyl and some Fossil Pokemon is to complete the associated field research tasks. As of May 2019, Pokemon Go Field Research Tasks still reward some of these Pokemon in the following tasks, so be mindful of these when picking up new research.

  • Win 5 Raids (Aerodactyl) Win a Level 3 or Higher Raid (Omanyte or Kabuto)

Sadly, these are the only tasks currently offering these rewards, which many may note is far less than when the Meltan Special Research went live. However, Pokemon GO eggs are another method to getting these Pokemon, if players know which eggs to focus on.

Pokemon GO Eggs May 2019

All of the aforementioned Pokemon can be hatched from the following eggs:

  • 10 KM eggs (Aerodactyl, Cranidos, Shieldon) 5 KM eggs (Kabuto, Omanyte)

Those working on fossil Pokemon have little research to find and a few eggs to churn out, but if they didn’t, these Pokemon wouldn’t have their rare status. Aerodactyl and fossil Pokemon may be hard to find, but they may not be as hard to catch as the new roaming Pokemon GO legendaries, Azel, Mesprit, and Uxie.

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions for Android and iOS devices.
