Nexomon: Extinction may have just beaten its rival TemTem to the punch, because this Pokémon-inspired game will be releasing on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch when it releases on August 28. It will also be getting a physical release from PQube for $29.99.

Fostering a familiar battle system and over 300 creatures to collect, Nexomon: Extinction takes us back to the old-school bird’s eye view look of the classic Pokemon games. However, the concept of the game’s storyline is anything but. As the game’s title informs, the world is at war with the humans and monsters against the Tyrant Nexomon. The world as the characters know it is on the brink of extinction.

According to the website that Gematsu found, you are a new tamer, who leaves their orphanage, gets a Nexomon, and joins a guild. You are then left to go on a quest to restore balance to the world.

The combat system is very similar to the Pokémon series. There are elemental weaknesses, and the battles are set up like the classic titles. You also take on trainers as you explore the world. With each landscape, you must walk across, there will be effects on the Nexomon in your party. The developer claims there are arid deserts and a freezing tundra to go through.

So far the Nexomon in the game range from interesting to downright ugly, but the overall graphics are pleasant with a Saturday Morning Cartoon-esque look.

While some may just call it a clone and move on, it’s always great for the consumer for more competition. Pokemon Sword & Shield disappointed fans of the series for the lack of evolution in the series, and the muddy graphics that look Gastly in comparison to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and even TemTem, a rival MMO inspired by the series. They were also annoyed about the lack of a full pokedex, which goes against the whole mantra of “Catch ‘Em All.”

If there wasn’t iteration, we wouldn’t have games like Fortnite: Battle Royale, Mortal Kombat, or Dragon Ball FighterZ. And with competition comes the drive to push forward and try new things. Pokemon Sword & Shield, despite the backlash, sold over 16 million copies worldwide, so the criticism raised towards it likely won’t be acknowledged.

Pokemon Sword & Shield was a fun game with a cool British landscape, awesome new Pokemon like Scorbunny and Zacian, and a new mechanic called Dynamaxing. While it wasn’t a huge leap that fans were hoping for, it still stands up as a great game.
