There are tons of different ways to ensure a more immersive experience in the newest games in the Pokémon franchise, Sword and Shield. There are outfits the player can don according to their favorite type, to boast their various achievements, or just because they think the outfits look cool.

In addition to these, there are also a few accessories, like hats, gloves, glasses, and even a few different hairstyle choices, making for more customization than ever before. We’ll be taking a look at the different uniforms that correspond to various Pokémon types, although a few notable ones are unfortunately missing, like Dragon and Fairy.

12 Psychic

This. This uniform surely must be number 1. It’s a perfect representation of the psychic type Pokémon in the games, with a psychedelic tye-dye pattern motif throughout the whole outfit, in addition to the use of rainbows to show us just how versatile the type in question can really be in the hands of the right trainer. The two spoons that have been warped together, no doubt belonging to Alakazam, are also maybe one of the best type symbols in the game.

11 Steel

The Steel-Type uniform is honestly dazzling, despite the fact that it looks more futuristic and robot-inspired than any Steel Pokémon that’s appeared in any of the games. This uniform looks like it took the character model for Genji from Blizzard’s Overwatch as a major inspiration, but it really paid off. The silver, the simulated segmenting of the steel patterns on the cloth, and an actually great green this time all come together to make what’s nearly the coolest uniform.

10 Ranked Battle Uniform

The Ranked Battle uniform is actually wonderful, despite the fact that it’s slightly reminiscent of the Steel-Type uniform.

It ends up looking more like something out of a Metroidvania than it does a turn-based RPG about catching mostly very cute creatures and making them battle. All of that to say, the exquisite simplicity of the design and the very eye-catching blue color used really cement the uniform’s place in the top 3.

9 Electric

The Electric uniform is really great, and it better be, since the franchise’s mascot is an Electric-Type itself. The one white sleeve juxtaposed against the other yellow sleeve is an example of some great attention to detail in this one, and the purple, yellow, and white motifs are very nice and befitting for the type. Although we would have loved to see some yellow thunderbolts all over the leggings, this one definitely deserves a top 5 spot.

8 Poison

Actually getting into the undeniably cool territory and clocking in at number 4 is the Poison-type uniform. This outfit looks like it was straight out of a gross Saturday morning cartoon that parents wouldn’t let their kids watch in the 80s, like TMNT. It’s got a nice navy background, with a neon-green Nickelodeon slime pattern that looks like it got spilled down the left shoulder. Apart from the indecipherable central shirt design, this one is great.

7 Battle Tower Uniform

The Battle Tower uniform is pretty great, although it does suffer from the fact that it’s just a little busy and not anywhere near as streamlined as the top 2 on this list. The galaxy patterning in general is a little bit too overdone to be particularly interesting, both in real life and in the realm of video game attire.

Overall, it’s one of the better uniforms in the game, but the sheer overwhelming the patterns cause altogether stop it from topping the rest.

6 Ghost

The Ghost uniform is just a little bit edgy, although that’s perfect for the spookiest of types featured in the games. The purple, black, and gold color palette of the outfit really accurately reflects the general color themes across the Ghost-type. While the shoes are pretty much the same as every other type, the accent of purple really ties the outfit together and doesn’t count as a point against this outfit.

5 Flying

The issue with the Flying-type uniform isn’t that it’s ugly or anything like that, because it legitimately isn’t. The problem here is that it doesn’t make the top half of the ranking because of how plain it is. It certainly isn’t the worst, but it also has no business ranking further up. The color palette is a nice but predictable sky blue, the insignia emblazoned on the chest is a feather, and the leggings are actually pretty cool.

4 Bug

The Bug outfit is a vast improvement on the 2 outfits to follow, but that doesn’t really make the cut for the top five, or even the top 3 quarters of this list to be honest.

It’s not immediately offensive or anything like that, and it definitely gets a pass if the trainer’s favorite type is Bug, but all that being said, the people at Game Freak could have no doubt picked a better green to serve as a base for this outfit, which in its current state is fairly reminiscent of baby puke. The catcher’s nets on the shirt are pretty cute though.

3 Ground

Ahhhh. Metal Gear. This outfit would definitely be more at home on a clone of Big Boss than it is in the game it was programmed into. The Ground-Type uniform is a pretty gross mixture of earth-toned camouflage patterns, with… wait… is that a cube of earth for the symbol on the center of the shirt, or is that one of Solid Snake’s signature hiding boxes? That’s a question that may never be answered but honestly, this outfit should have stayed hiding in the shadows.

2 Ice

Overall, the Ice-Type uniform is pretty bland, not featuring nearly enough of the spunk that’s generally reflected in the fairly diverse type. One of the most glaring issues with this outfit is how plain the color palette is. The outfit is almost entirely white, aside from the gray socks and a little touch of color in the bowtie. While sometimes an all-white outfit is a look, it falls entirely flat here, especially when compared to all of the other great choices outlined here.

1 Normal

The Normal Type outfit is somehow even blander than the Ice Type outfit, which at least gets some points for committing to the all-white thing. The Normal Type outfit might as well be the player’s starting garb, and it’s a shame that it’s a requirement occasionally in the game. The only real design component to the outfit is that it’s littered with Pokéballs, which literally couldn’t have been more of an obvious choice.
