To the surprise of many long-time fans, every single Kanto Pokemon did not make it into the Sword & Shield base game after the Dexit cuts. Many feel Game Freak plays favorites and that Kanto is often much-preferred to other generations, but yet, many Kanto Pokemon didn’t make the cut.

Some have returned in the two rounds of DLC, though, including quite a few in the Crown Tundra expansion. From Fossils to Legendaries, here are each of the Kanto Pokemon that found their way back, and where you can locate them in the area.

11 Nidoran♀, Nidorina, And Nidoqueen

After your first few moments of exploration in the Crown Tundra, you’ll probably come across the Nido-families, as they’re very common and located near Freezington — one of the first areas. Nidoran♀ can be found in Frostpoint Field in normal weather, intense sun, snow, snowstorms, or when it’s overcast as a wandering spawn. It can also be found on the overworld and in the grass in Giant’s Bed during almost any weather, as well as in Old Cemetery as a random encounter.

Nidorina and Nidoqueen can also both be found in Giant’s Bed during most weather types as wandering spawns. Alternatively, Nidoran♀ can be evolved into Nidorina at level 16 and then into Nidoqueen with a Moon Stone.

10 Nidoran♂, Nidorino, And Nidoking

The male version of that family — Nidoran♂, Nidorino, and Nidoking — can also be found now. They’re basically all found in the same places through the same methods. They’ll also evolve in the same manner, first at level 16 and then with a Moon Stone.

It’s worth noting that all six members of this joint family can also be found in Max Raid Battles in Giant’s Bed, the Frigid Sea, or Ballimere Lake.

9 Zubat And Golbat

Amazingly, until the release of Crown Tundra, Zubat was not a pest that would slow down the player’s progress as it has always been through most of the previous games. However, this Poison/Flying-type is back, and that’s for the better. What’s a Pokemon game without Zubat?

It’s pretty easy to find, and it’ll come as no surprise where: caves. Head to the Lakeside Cave, Roaring-Sea Caves, or the Tunnel to the Top and you should pretty easily find a few Zubats flying around. Golbat can be found in the same places (except Lakeside Cave) or evolved from Zubat at level 22.

Crobat, which isn’t a Kanto Pokemon but is a valuable member of the Zubat family, can’t be found in the wild. But, it will evolve from Golbat while leveled up at a high friendship level.

8 Jynx

Jynx, the Ice/Psychic-type from Generation I, is an obvious choice for inclusion in an icy tundra. Luckily, it returned in the Crown Tundra and can be found pretty easily.

Jynx will appear as an overworld spawn in Slippery Slope or Frostpoint Field during most weather types. It can also be found as one of the Pokemon trainers can choose to keep if encountered during Dynamax Adventures.

Its pre-evolution from Johto, Smoochum, can be bred from Jynx at the Pokemon Nursery or found as a random encounter in the same places as Jynx. It’ll then evolve into a Jynx when leveled up with high enough friendship.

7 Electabuzz

Jynx was initially part of an unofficial trio alongside Electabuzz and Magmar, who have both also returned in the Crown Tundra, along with their Baby pre-evolutions and evolved forms.

Electabuzz is easily found in thunderstorms. Giant’s Bed, Old Cemetery, Giant’s Foot, Frigid Sea, Three-Point Pass, and Ballimere Lake are all the places Electabuzz calls home, so long as they are having thunderstorms. Like Jynx, it can also be chosen to be kept at the end of a Dynamax Adventure if encountered.

Also like Jynx, Electabuzz’s pre-evolution, Elekid, can be found in the same places as a random encounter during storms. It evolves into Electabuzz at level 30, and then into Electivire when traded holding an Electirizer. Electivire can also be found in storms in some of the same areas.

6 Magmar

Completing this unofficial trio is Magmar and its evolutionary family. Find it in Slippery Slope, Ballimere Lake, Three-Point Pass, Old Cemetery, Giant’s Bed, Frostpoint Field, Snowslide Slope, or Giant’s Foot during intense sun, or from Dynamax Adventures.

Again, Magmar’s evolutionary family members, Magby and Magmorter, can be discovered in many of the same areas during intense sun. Magby is a random encounter in the grass, while Magmortar will be a roaming encounter. Evolve Magby at level 30 and then Magmar by trading it with a Magmarizer, if you’d rather evolve than catch them.

5 Omanyte And Omastar

Almost every fossil Pokemon was brought back in the Crown Tundra (sorry, Shieldon and Crandios), including all five from Kanto. Those with Sword will be able to find Omanyte and its evolution, Omastar, in their game, as they’re exclusive to Sword. Shield players will need to find one via trade.

Omanyte will appear in Giant’s Foot swimming around in the river. From there, you can head up to the Roaring-Sea Caves, where it can also appear in the water. While in the caves, you might also be able to find an Omastar as a wandering spawn. Otherwise, evolve Omanyte by leveling it up to level 40.

4 Kabuto And Kabutops

Players with Shield will instead be able to find Kabuto and Kabutops. They’re both found in all the same areas, though. Kabuto is swimming around in Giant’s Foot or the Roaring-Sea Caves, and Kabutops can be found as a wandering spawn in the latter. Plus, they evolve at the same level: 40. Players with Sword need to find someone with Shield to trade with.

3 Aerodactyl

The final fossil Pokemon from Kanto to make its return is Aerodactyl, the Rock/Flying-type. It’s fairly straightforward to locate, too.

Head to Giant’s Bed during normal weather, cloudy weather, a thunderstorm, fog, rain, snow, or a blizzard, and you should be able to see Aerodactyl flying around. Press the left thumbstick to whistle or ring the bike bell if you can’t reach and Aerodactyl will fly down toward you.

2 Dratini, Dragonair, And Dragonite

Every pseudo-legendary Pokemon is finally back in the games with the return of quite a few of them in the Crown Tundra, including the Dragonite family.

Dratini can be found while fishing in Ballimere Lake or swimming around in the water while you’re surfing on your bike. It appears in the water during normal weather, cloudy weather, rain, storms, intense sun, snow, or fog. Dragonair can also be found in the same place during thunderstorms or fog.

Dragonite can be in the wild, too. It can appear on the overworld in the areas around Ballimere Lake’s water during rain or thunderstorms. If you want to evolve a Dratini, level it to 30 and then 55.

1 Zapdos, Moltres, And Articuno

Many, many Legendary Pokemon have now returned, including those from Generation I. Mewtwo was already transferable from past games via Pokemon HOME, but the other Legendaries — Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno — have made their return as well.

It’s fairly simple to encounter them. They appear in Dynamax Adventures like most other Legendaries. Note, though, that they now have Galarian forms as well, each of which has different typing. These are caught as part of the Legendary Quests with Peony, rather than in a Dynamax Adventure.

After nearing the Dyna Tree, the Galarian variants of these birds will spawn in the wild. Zapdos will be in the Wild Area, Moltres will be at the Isle of Armor, and Articuno will be in the Crown Tundra.
