The Pokemon franchise continues to evolve and adds layers of new mechanics and features that try and keep it fresh as the years go by. With the release of Pokemon X & Y, the Fairy-type was introduced, and through retroactive editing, many of the cute Normal-types of past generations were turned into Fairy-types.

It wasn’t perfect, but even with the recent release of Pokemon Sword & Shield, the designers have incorporated the new type in a seamless manner. Though the type is new that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its fair share of studs and duds through the generations.

8 Impidimp (Galar)

Impidimp is the worst Fairy-type of the Galar region for reasons more so related to the lore behind the Pokemon featured in its Pokedex entries. The Wily Pokemon came on the scene as the base form of a 2-stage evolutionary line in Pokemon word & Shield. The Dark and Fairy-type is said to thrive off of the negative energy others feel and exude. This means that it is a Pokemon that fuels itself on toxicity and will go as far as to steal from humans by sneaking into their home then feeding off of the frustration they feel from being robbed. It’s just a vile creature people should avoid no matter what.

7 Morelull (Alola)

As strange as it may be the Pokemon franchise has an abundance of mushroom-related and inspired Pokemon which each new generation’s version getting more and more lackluster. Morelull, despite making an appearance in Detective Pikachu, is still an afterthought to most fans.

Its base stats are below average at best and it happens to evolve into something resembling the creepy internet sensation that was “Salad Fingers”. The Alolan region is bountiful with interesting Pokemon and the Grass and Fairy-type Illuminating Pokemon shouldn’t be counted among them.

6 Klefki (Kalos)

With almost every type that isn’t the Fairy-type, the Kalos region has a handful at best of Pokemon with that type. Pokemon X & Y did, however, introduce the Fairy-type and because of that, it is the most populated type in the entirety of the Kalos region. Klefki is often the bud of Pokemon jokes pertaining to an observation that the franchise lacks creativity in the modern era. If it happens to get a new regional form or evolution the perception of it can change, but for the time being the sentient collection of keys remains the worst Fairy-type of the 6th generation of Pokemon games.

5 Cottonee (Unova)

As previously mentioned with Klefki, the Kalos region is notorious for having few Pokemon of each type, but since it introduced the Fairy-type it has an abundance of Fairy-type Pokemon. The Unova region featured in Pokemon Black & White on the other hand managed to introduce 150 new Pokemon and only 3 of them (all part of the same evolutionary line) are of the Fairy-type. Cottonee isn’t terrible, but when it’s the lowest form of the only Fairy-type in a given region it gets labeled as such simply due to circumstance.

4 Mime Jr. (Sinnoh)

Pokemon as a franchise has understood for quite a while that people get uncomfortable looking at or interacting with Mr. Mime. It seems the designers decided to troll the fan base as they released a pre-evolution or baby form of Mr. Mime named Mime Jr. in Pokemon Diamond & Pearl.

It’s everything people dislike about Mr. Mime in a condensed form. The Fairy-type will be showing up again in social media feeds as gamers explore the Sinnoh region in the upcoming remakes of the 4th generation games in the latter part of 2021.

3 Azurill (Hoenn)

Continuing the trend of baby Pokemon on this list is the pre-evolutionary form of Marill, who was once rumored to be named Pikablu before the full release of Pokemon Gold & Silver. A generation later in the Hoenn region that lovable blue rodent was gifted a smaller and more adorable form. The problem with Azurill is that its base stats being so low force the trainer to build up their friendship level with it via complicated and involved ways. At the very least it’s cute enough to justify the lengths needed to evolve it.

2 Cleffa (Johto)

Pokemon Gold & Silver brought the world to the Johto region which featured several beloved Pokemon that the fandom would fall in love with for years to come. It also introduced pre-evolutions to existing Pokemon evolutionary lines that were commonly referred to as “baby Pokemon”. Of these new creatures is a Fairy-type named Cleffa that evolves into Clefairy who can then evolve into Clefable. Of its 6 primary base stats, 3 of them are in the red, including its speed stat which sits at a miserable 15.

1 Mr. Mime (Kanto)

It’s hard to deny just how creepy and weird Mr. Mime is as a Pokemon. From its human-like design and proportions to the fact that it spends all of its time in the anime by Ash Ketchum’s side. The creature even managed to sneak in a prominent cameo in the Detective Pikachu live-action Pokemon film that was released a few years ago. Its base stats and new Galar regional form aren’t half bad, but humans have a natural aversion to clowns and mimes and this Pokemon is the manifestation of both of those things in the worst way.
